This site translates this La Opinion article about an (English-language) interview with California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger:
It was an error to support Proposal 187, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted yesterday during a meeting with the editorial board of La Opinion. The states chief executive expressed his positions on immigration, public education, the healthcare crisis, and his vision for California, within the context of his campaign and its engagement of the state's Latin community with a view to his re-election in November.
There's audio at the second link, with more to follow tomorrow.
I have three statements to make:
1. As before, grit your teeth and smile! Arnold is better than the alternative.
2. La Opinion publisher Monica Lozano not only serves on the board of MALDEF, she's a sleazy race baiter (on a local TV show a few years ago, she was asked a leading question by Tony Valdez or another of the local reconquistadores whether opposition to illegal immigration was based on racism and answered "yes" in a definitive manner.)

Note that this is news about California's governor, and not simply a blog post.
Arnold continues to skate leftward. Oh, well, as long as he keeps that "R" next to his name, I guess it's OK... /ralph mode
My first thought was "What a douche." So was my second and third thought.
As long as he keeps that R next to his name you better vote for him! Politics over principles after all.

As long he has Tom McClintock........
Not surprising. Most liberals opposed Prop187. Arnold is just a late to the party flip-flopper.
Arnold, Arnold, Arnold.
Shame.
Angelides will never get my vote for any office. Arnie, slowly but surely, is working himself toward that same decision. The best scenario possible is Arnie and McClintock (Lt. Gov.) get elected and, for some unforseeable reason, Arnie has to resign shortly after taking office.

My transcription of audio clip:
Jazmín Ortega: Back in 1994 you supported Proposition 187. You still believe that undocumented immigrants should not get healthcare or education?
Arnold Schwarzenegger: No. I think that I've been very clear about that. As a matter of fact I was the first one to actually propose, in my, just before the budget, I put it actually into my budget, money for undocumented immigrants actually to give the counties the money and to let them make the decision on who[m] they should insure and not insure. So that was, I think, looking back, it was the wrong decision.

I should have copyrighted that comment last year when I offered it ;-) .. lol
I'd be rich I tell ya.
That is the only hope we have, sad to say.
But, on a positive note, Gov. Schwarzenegger insists that he is concerned with giving drivers licenses to undocumented people, because we don't really know who they are or what their real addresses are. He has been advised by Homeland Security that giving out licenses is not a good idea. He says it is a federal issue, and we should wait for immigration reform and background checks, etc.

AUDIO - Arnold on the Minutemen (my translation)
I made comments about the Minutemen that, you know, was probably a mistake of some of the things that are said--you know, that they are doing a great job and all of those things. What I really meant was that everyone in America has the right to go and to take over where the law leaves, er, isn't eh--
[Interruption from La Opinion - Inaudible]
I made this very clear. I said I don't like anyone to harass anyone. I don't like that anyone should arrest anyone. I don't like anyone to carry arms and all of those things. I made this very clear.
But, the fact of the matter is, at the same time, some of my latino friends have always brought to my attention that they are racists, you know, for instance. I said well I'm against that.
...say they should be sent back... that's a stupid comment... They can't be sent back; it would cost us $600 billion dollars and all of this. It's just stupid things that some of the people say.
So, my point is that when it comes to immigration, the way I really feel about it is it's a shame that people have to go and do those kind of things in the first place. The federal government has created an atmosphere that people are so angry and so frustrated that the system isn't working. The federal government has not been able to secure the borders.
And the same thing is the frustration you see amongst the latino population. ... 500,000 people out there running around and letting everyone know we are angry. We are upset about the way we are being treated and that we don't have equality and that we don't have the treatment that we want.
So, everybody is frustrated. You have the non-latinos. You have the latinos. Everyone is out there doing their thing. In the meantime, the federal government is not doing their thing.
So what I am saying is if the federal government would do their thing, their responsibility, we wouldn't have any Minutemen.
It is becoming almost impossible to defend him anymore. The major problem with him is that Angelides (his opponant) is worse. I am finally thinking of wasting my vote on a libertarian just on principal. My state, its politicians, and it's employees are certifiably insane.
Thank you so much for pulling the covers of this nasty man!!!
Dont waste the vote, thats how we ended up with Clinton as President. I would rather hold ground or lose an inch, then fall deep into the chasm.
