Immigration Proposal Aims to Bridge Republican Divide
The Washington Post ^ | July 25, 2006 | Jim VandeHei and Charles Babington

Posted on 07/25/2006 10:21:33 AM PDT by AppleButter

In an attempt to strike a pre-election Republican compromise on immigration, two conservative lawmakers unveiled a plan today that would allow most of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States a chance to work here legally, but only after the government certifies that U.S. borders have been sufficiently secured.

The proposal -- sponsored by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.) and Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.) -- would pressure illegal immigrants to "self-deport" to their home countries within two years of the law's enactment and apply for a new kind of visa that would allow them to return to the United States quickly and work legally if a job awaits them. They would have to work here for 17 years, however, to be eligible for U.S. citizenship.

-- snip --

The impasse will not be easy to break. The push for a pre-election compromise has lost its sense of urgency, as both sides privately calculate that no deal might be the best politics and produce the best policy.

I think employers should immediately be required to verify immigration status before for all new employees are hired and put on the payroll.

Works for me.

Most of these immigrants are Mexican 56% or Central American 22%. There is absolutely not reason why they ought to enjoy preference over anybody else. Let's make sure everybody coming in on a work visa speaks english and that no one group comprises more than 5% (English, Irish, Chinese, Indian, Poles, Estonians, etc.).

Ahh, but the English, Irish, Chinese, Indians, Poles, Estonians, etc. are not part of the coming United States of North America.

"Why is it no politician or government official seems to have the ability to state exactly that fact as to why their level of government chooses not to enforce this aspect of federal law?"

That's simple. They all have golf buddies who are hiring illegals. Some of them even have their own illegals, nannying their kids or driving them around.

Surely you don't think that our elected officials really care what you think. They have more important people to consider, and they're hiring illegals as fast as they can.

Why? Well, they can do a lot of it under the table, and avoid all kinds of paperwork. The illegals work pretty hard...often harder than others, and you can pay them less, overall.

Just think about it, then look around you.

They can allow these illegals to work here freely all they want.

But..here should be some of the terms: NO citizenship or path to citizenship for lawbreakers - Ever.

NO Welfare of any kind-they need to start putting back some of the money they now send to Mexico by paying their own rent, gas, food, etc.

NO free medical- even a poor person can afford 10 cents on the dollar to pay back benevolent Citizen Taxpayers).

NO Social Security - as they will not, and do not, pay into this system, even our own poor get refunds without actually paying taxes.

NO free education - Schools are paid by Taxpayers, which illegals ARE NOT..they do not need an education to do the jobs Americans won't do.

"Ahh, but the English, Irish, Chinese, Indians, Poles, Estonians, etc. are not part of the coming United States of North America."

They are when you consider that 20% of what's been coming across the Mexican border in the last 20 years, or more, are from all over the world.

Just like the Chinese that were being unloaded by the ship load that I was offered $1000/head to fly from Guadalahara to a strip next to the US border to get them past the Mexican road checks in the mid 1980s.

The 20% figure came from talking to Border Patrol at Brown Field about the same time when I was waiting for a passanger.

Three houses were built in our town by the local housing authority for the poor. They are worth about $300,000 and were sold to the beneficiaries for $200,000. They own the houses outright.

And I don't know if it means anything, but since you are all asking, yes, the occupants of all three houses are hispanic (and driving brand new cars yet to receive the license plates).

Get over the notion that they are all poor and working for legitimate business owners. We are past that. Many have their own businesses now (roofting, electric, retail stores, etc.). They are illegals hiring illegals.

We are so past the point of "who will make our beds in our hotels and who will wash our dishes and who will pick in the fields..."

Ahhh but you just solved the problem.....there would be no illegals here then. If they had to pay for all the freebies they get here they essentially would be making what they made back in Mexico. None of them could afford to live here then and they would all leave.

And if they don't 'self-deport', what then?

Then the fines being imposed on their employers and landlords will have shifted the cost for their medical care and education off of the tax payer, one hopes.

"If not up for re-election she'd have voted for the Senate bill. "

It's pretty obvious to predict the future here.

They will get behind legislation that makes them look tough on the issue, all the while knowing that the agreement on the Hill is nothing gets passed this year.

Then, after the elections they will push an amnesty bill through, certain that all of the sheeple will have forgotten before the next election comes around.

There is no "divide" with the Electorate. 99% of us want the laws enforced and the lawbreakers punished.

1% want cheap labor to stick it to us to pick up the bill.

The "divide" is with 99% of the politicians listening to the 1% who want cheap labor.

We could get a lot done by heavily taxing money transfers out of the country.

Too bad our own Government can't see the obvious.

Politicians seem to think that going after employers who "knowingly" hire illegals is the answer. But that is just a smoke screen. "knowingly" is the keyword to maintain the status quo. We have already been hearing how easy false ID is to get and how hard it is to prove if falsified.

Fining employers who hire illegals is a losing proposition from the get-go..it was initiated to make the sheep believe something is being done about the wolf.

I say let employers hire illegals at whatever puny price they want! Then, the illegals can use that money to pay their way 100%.

By my personal observations and knowledge of the Hispanic workforce within the oilfields, I know many illegals do not work at all - specifically the women.

Typically, the male will work. With that money they buy beer and new cars. Meanwhile, back at the hacienda, the female pushes out children at taxpayer expense and draws welfare to pay for rent and food.

I use the term "male" and Female" because, in a major percent of cases, the female is NOT married to the male..not marrying is an integral part of using the system. More welfare is gained by the Female if she is unmarried.

It is possible they could be legally married in Mexico, but there is no way our Government can (or probably wants)prove that.

I agree. This should be done. The Taxpayer in this Country grows weary of the burden placed on them by foreign freeloaders. IMO, Illegal workers and legal workers who transfer money out of this country should PAY for the privilege of having the job they use to do so.
