COMMENTARY

Diana Irey: Conservative American for Congress

By Chris Davis

Jul 24, 2006

Make no mistake.  Conservatism will save America.  Conservatism will be the bedrock upon which all Americans can place their inevitable gratitude.  It is conservatism that will preserve an enduring moral order and everlasting prosperity for the United States of America.

Those indelible qualities have been incorporated into America's soul from our Founding Fathers.  They sought a Republic as moral, as just and divine as any in the world.  They sought an America full of hope and inspiration for all of mankind.  And they founded a country bathed in God's wisdom, dedicated to liberty and based in economic prosperity, setting a shining example for those that choose to follow.  In our forefathers' wisdom, they handed down an America that should be cherished and celebrated with every waking moment.

Conservatives are the brightest hope of America's future.  They are not ignorant, violent or racist.  They believe in equality for all men and women, yet know that it cannot extend to a great social experiment.  It is the sense of respect and duty that leads American conservatives to believe God ordained the inalienable right of freedom to all mankind; that America is a beacon in the darkness.

And it is that sense of respect and duty that leads Diana Irey to run for U.S. Congress, in Pennsylvania's 12th District, encompassing a large area to east and south of Pittsburgh.  Ms. Irey is a conservative.  Not because she is running against markedly liberal, John Murtha, but largely because she runs on those principles upon which conservatives hold dear.

In 1995, she ran as Washington county commissioner, at the urging of leading Republican Party members.  She had no experience, but her sense of community service led her to the race.  Having a sense of pride in her community, she exhibited those conservative values without voting for one single tax increase, as well as spurring the growth of business in Washington County.

Diana Irey believes that America is worth driving, worth protecting and worth all she can give.  She believes in legal immigration and border protection, and isn't afraid to tackle the issue as an American.

"Illegal immigration is a huge problem," Ms. Irey explains, in an interview with E.L. Core.  "It needs to stop. We need to secure our borders, first and foremost. We need to do something to deal with all the people that are here. And it drives me crazy when I hear that we've captured illegals and then we let them go."

As a conservative candidate, she isn't in favor of amnesty either.  She is willing to speak up on behalf of thousands of frustrated Pennsylvanians and Americans, and she is willing to carry that position to the U.S. House of Representatives.

In her E.L. Core interview, she states, "I don't think it is a good idea. Amnesty violates our rule of law. And if we say it's okay for them to violate our rule of law now, what's to say they're going to have any respect for any other laws we have, in the future? And if we allow them to violate the rule of law, how does the fellow who couldn't pay his taxes and lost his home because he couldn't pay his property taxes – how's he going to feel? What does that say to that person? And what does it say to the person who's going five miles over the speed limit and gets stopped and gets a ticket? I think we have to be very careful how we deal with this situation. The bottom line is they've broken the law."

The values shared—beginning in 1776—have been passed down from father to son and mother to daughter for generations.  Every generation faced its own unique challenges, beginning with the New Deal and its proponents.  American conservatives believe, however, "The Great Society" was the beginning of the downfall of personal responsibility, ushering in an era of social programs to the bane of American taxpayers.  They know that no truly great society can survive by basing its foundation on wealth redistribution.  They know the Founding Fathers created the Constitution—the greatest conservative document in World History—establishing a free economy and placing the aspirations of a young country on the individuals that drive it.  That generation of Americans carved out the beginnings of the finest nation on Earth.  They were difference makers, forging traditions in morality, divine justice and a belief in the rule of law that governs the conduct of the people.

Diana Irey is no different.  She is willing to protect the Pledge of Allegiance.  She is willing to support the Second Amendment.  She is willing to vote no on gay "marriage."  She is willing to provide a lasting set of moral values for Pennsylvanians and for Americans.  Jack Murtha was unwilling to support those values cherished by so many of his constituents.

As Russell Kirk once wrote, "Conservatives understand that men and women are best content when they can feel that they live in a stable world of enduring values.  Most conservatives are neither rich nor powerful. But they do, even the most humble of them, derive great benefits from our established Republic. They have liberty, security of person and home, equal protection of the laws, the right to the fruits of their industry, and opportunity to do the best that is in them."

Ms. Irey is also willing to take the fight to those that would harm us.  With her conservative principles, she places her support behind those that would wear the uniform of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.  She longs to see the mission in Iraq complete for the sake of liberty and for the protection of the citizens of Pennsylvania and the United States.

She has seen veterans from across Pennsylvania and America rally to her side, and has even been the beneficiary of campaign contributions and good wishes from soldiers deployed to battlefields in Iraq.

Conservative values are passed down to ensure the right direction of this Republic.  There can be no vitality rooted in liberalism.  So the difference makers, such as Diana Irey, emerge at the ready, preserving enduring moral values, conservatism, and breeding a good culture.

Men and women that express conservative thought convey the sentiment of the majority of Americans—the people rallying under every exigency, for love of country, love of mankind and love of God.  These Americans, the difference makers, believe in the United States, promoting the growth of conservatism through the Internet, talk radio, television and in the U.S. Congress.  Now, they exist in all forms, propagating the belief that conservatism will save America.

Diana Irey believes in Pennsylvania.  She believes that propagating those conservative values will lead to a better Pennsylvania and better America.  She has emerged at the ready to carry those values and that fight to the U.S. Congress.  She runs for the conservative cause and all that support it.  She runs for Pennsylvania and a better America.  And she runs to preserve the greatest of unions: The United States of America. With your support, come November, Diana Irey can transition from Pennsylvanian to American difference maker.

Win or lose, part of the objective is to make the RATS spend money defending this district and also to keep Murtha at home instead of barnstorming the country for a Democratic House.

There's always gotta be some keyboard critic proclaiming superiority, throwing random darts from his/her living room.

But I understand why you feel the need to wade on here proclaiming she'll lose, Tz. That way you can rationalize your laziness and unwillingness to help elect conservative candidates and take an important stand for our armed forces. If you admitted Ms. Irey had a chance to win, which she indeed does, then your lard butt might have a guilty conscience for your lack of action and death grip on your wallet. Well, unfortunately your adolescent jabs are quite transparent. And I'll happily respond in kind.

But not to worry. There are plenty of us around here doing the work of many like you. We'll pick up your slack, as we always do. Whether it's FReeping at events, mailing care packages, supporting FR via FReepathons, distributing E-mails, volunteering at campaign HQ, actively working to elect conservatives, etc.

Stop by for another visit any time. At least you can say you bumped a thread for Irey.

True hopefully they'll spend tons defending this seat. Worst case scenario is Irey gets lots of face time before the voters. Murtha's no spring chicken ya know.

Then how about sending a dollar for every year you lived in the district to Ms. Irey's campaign? It's a lot easier than attempting to undermine her chances.

Except this isn't a classic Republican versus Democrat kinda race. Democrats in that area are pro-lifers. Therefore both candidates are pro-lifers and social conservative types. That leaves the real issues being national security and welfare-state programs. I suspect Murtha is seen as being good enough for the lesser issue of national security and perfect for the the number one issue in the area, welfare-state programs. He's a proven pro-life socialist. IMO that's all he needs to be.

You're a bit behind the curve on this race, but at least you're making an effort at discourse. If Kerry pulled only 51%, then a lot of folks pulled the lever for President Bush and Jackass Murtha. And yet you think these same folks are just gonna be thrilled that socialist (in your terms) Murtha is now selling out our troops, proclaiming they're guilty of cold-blooded murder and the like? Suffice it to say I disagree.

If Ms. Irey had no chance, there's no way she could have raised $300,000 from a grass-roots effort. Is she an underdog? Sure. But she's definitely one worth supporting.

Thank you for the compliment, jazusamo. I appreciate it more than you know. It's even nicer coming from a Washingtonian.

"Visualizing" victory won't make it happen. You may not have noticed but this is a discussion board made up almost entirely of people who back Irey over Murtha (as do I). It's not out of line to express opinions about the reality of the situation as we see it. Nothing said on this thread can possibly undermine her chances so knock off the hyperbole.
However your idea of sending a dollar for year amount to her campaign is a good one. I send money to candidates and so get lots of junk mail and meet and great invitations for political candidates. I'll look to dig her mail out of the pile.

I'll express my opinion of your jaded opinion whenever and wherever I wish. Kinda sucks how freedom of speech works both ways, doesn't it? I hate it when I have to back up things I say!

"Visualizing" victory won't make it happen.

In other words, we're dreaming. Right?

You two are chattering at the wrong folks.

A Dozen Reasons why Commissioner Irey Can Defeat Rep. John Murtha

  1. John Kerry only managed to get 51% of the 12th district's vote in 2004, and Jack Murtha cannot realistically be expected to match that very high Presidential voter turnout.
  2. Diana Irey has 10 years of experience as Washington County's Commissioner, including seven consecutive balanced budgets without a tax increase.
  3. Veterans are incredibly upset with her dishonorable opponent, Mr. Murtha, and they are organizing to call attention to his despicable behavior. Two examples:
     >>>> www.vets4irey.com
     >>>> www.bootmurtha.com
  4. Commissioner Irey understands that Okinawa is not located in or near the Persian Gulf.
  5. Pennsylvania has already exhibited an anti-incumbent trend this year.
  6. While Jack Murtha does not, Ms. Irey, Pennsylvanians and Americans in general still strongly believe in the presumption of innocence - especially when it comes to freedom's defenders during wartime
  7. When Jack Murtha first joined Congress, American had not yet celebrated its bicentennial. Diana Irey is relatively young and attractive, while Jack Murtha is... not.
  8. Diana Irey is articulate, while Jack Murtha is a tightly wound, stuttering idiot.
  9. Mr. Murtha's brother - Kit - is a Washington lobbyist who in 2004 landed about $20 million for his defense contractor clients. Coincidentally (??), Jack Murtha has been the top recipient of defense industry dollars for the past three years. Source
  10. Rep. Jack Murtha is an unindicted co-conspirator from the Abscam scandal; Commissioner Irey is not.
  11. Diana Irey will be a member of the ruling majority party; Jack Murtha is twelve years removed from that position.

Wow I am so proud of Westmorland County.

As well you should be! Perhaps you could arrange to obtain some flyers, fact sheets etc. from the campaign office to share with your family members. ;*)

You should read a thread before you post.

First I didn't say Irey didn't have a chance. I said I think she's going to lose and that's based on living in the district for so long. I think Murtha's selling out the troops can be spun away in that district. As long as people see it as criticism of Iraq policy and not a broad anti-military stance. I have to admit even if they think he's anti-military that pales in comparison the welfare-state issue. The only place I've ever lived that had as many people looking to the government to take care of them in some way was West Virginia.

Ms. Irey is an underdog because of the condition of the electorate. I'm glad she's getting a good war chest together and hopefully by some miracle she'll win this time but if not there's always next time.
