Israel needs time

[snip]

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis have fled the missiles raining down on northern Israel, but it's the hundreds of thousands of Lebanese who have fled the Israeli bombers searching for those missile launchers who we see on our screens. Hizballah bombs fall indiscriminately on civilian targets in Israel, packed with ball-bearings to cause as much injury to people as possible; but it's the collateral damage to civilians in Lebanon resulting from Hizballah's use of civilian shields for its artillery that we see on the news. Israelis are stoical, that's not a story; the Lebanese cry and show off their pain to the cameras. That's more like it. The propaganda machine is back in gear and all of Europe is lapping it up like warm milk.

Israel should be going for the long game, a solution to this decade long cancer NOT a drama queen headline breeding short term military blitz. It would be utterly stupid for Israel to prune back Hezbollah when it is in both their's, and the the NATO powers, interests to completely uproot Iran front group Hezbollah.

All the plans advanced so far would accomplish is a lot of dead Jews for a short term "Quick fix". Hezbollah would simply bleed the Israelis while pulling back into sanctuary areas in Syria and northern Lebanon. Then when the Israelis could no longer stand the blood and treasure long term occupation was costing them, Hezbollah would simply flow back into the same positions they hold now. And 5 years from now the Israelis would face the same crises in Lebanon

Like the US in Iraq, Israel should go for a long term FIX that uproots Hezbollah and creates a viable Lebanese Govt that can police its own territory.

That maybe why the Israelis have indicated interested in a NATO force to do in Lebanon what it is currently doing in Afghanistan. Suppress the terrorist groups while the Lebanese build a viable nation state that can provide long term stability.

For Israel, and the West, that outcome would be a durable strategic victory in what will be a very long war

You make some very insightful comments. This will be a long war; Hezbollah is VERY tough and determined; and the UN is certainly no an adequate solution as the new peacekeeping force. Israel's "incursion" into Lebanon may take more time.

FOX News Channel reporter Shepard Smith, interviewing an Israeli soldier on the border between Israel and Lebanon today (at about 1915 GMT) heard the soldier, who had recently been engage with Hezbollah fighters say, “They are an army. They are not a terror group.”

Hezbollah, throughout its history, has defined itself. Previous definitions of like “terror group” hardly apply, as the Israeli soldier noticed today.

Hezbollah's leaders distance themselves from the word terrorist. They call themselves a resistance movement and they are proud of their operations against Israel from Lebanon.

These anti-Semitic Euroweenie appeasers can whine and moan until the cows come home. They just need to stay out of the way while Israel finishes the job of ridding the world of this vermin once and for all. And the Lebanese need to understand that this is the consequence of willingly allowing terrorists to set up shop within your borders. Don't start reconstruction until the disease is eradicated, or be prepared to watch those hi-rises crumble once again.

Never be able to finish the job in Lebanon. A cease fire will come before the cleanup. Even then, this contingency of Hezbollah is just a small group worldwide. Their base is Iran and no one will take them out, including us.
