Teen Uses Discovery Channel Tip To Escape Alligator Attack

Mom: Tip To Poke Eye With Thumb Saved Son's Life

POSTED: 9:29 pm EDT July 23, 2006
UPDATED: 9:58 pm EDT July 23, 2006

A 16-year-old being dragged into a Central Florida lake by a large alligator used a tip he watched on the Discovery Channel to break free and likely save his life, according to a Local 6 News report.

Corey Workman was in a remote area of the St. John's River in Volusia County, Fla., just before midnight Saturday, throwing rocks and sticks into the water. Authorities said a 6- to 8-foot-long alligator jumped out of the water, grabbed Workman's left foot and dragged him into the lake.

"He struggled with the alligator but could not get free until he remembered something he saw on the Discovery Channel about what to do if you are getting attacked by an alligator," Local 6 reporter Deborah Garcia said.

Workman poked the alligator in the eye with his thumb as he was told to do on the television show. His mom said the lesson of poking at the alligator's eye saved her son's life, Garcia said.

"If he was every bitten by a shark, he (learned) to put his hand in its gills and if he was ever attacked by a gator, to take his thumb and poke his thumb all the way in his eye and the gator released him," mother Elisa Badger said. "Thank God he was able to maintain his composure and not panic. He knew exactly what to do." "Everyone is calling teenager Corey Workman a very lucky young man today," Garcia said.

Trappers were trying to capture the alligator Sunday night. Workman remained in Florida Hospital Deland but could be released as early as Monday.

....Then they began attacking people.

I have also heard that one reason gators attack is that they have been fed by the locals who think that they are like a stylish pet.  The gators become accustomed to being near and around people and begin to consider them as a valid entree item, because they associate food with them.

I'm sure that this may only be one small part of the reason though and your points are well taken.

Good job, kid!! Add to this the freeper in Canada who just stabbed an attacking black bear to death with his hunting knife and it's been a good week for humans fighting off predatory critters.

Note to self...don't go to remote areas after dark throwing things into strange, dark bodies of water.

Where I grew up they had this ol' swimmin' hole that had alligators and crocodiles and sharks and moray eels and pirhanas and aardvarks. As long as you stayed on your side of the hole, they never bothered you

Call me skeptical, but 16 yrs. old, and just before midnight on a saturday night and he's throwing rocks and sticks into a lake???

My take on the evening, is after he and a couple buddies were on the tail end of a case of Bud, they thought "Let's go f**k with that gator and throw some rocks at it..."

Sounds quite likely  :-)

The kid will keep the full truth of what happened as a secret until the day he dies, I'm sure; and the gator certainly won't tell.   :-)

holy smokes -- way to go, kid.

I really had no idea -- 20 years in Florida, by the way -- that alligators were this aggressive. No idea.

"Trappers were trying to capture the alligator Sunday night."

This should be a little easier than the usual alligator hunt after an attack. This one only has one good eye left!

Corey's mom is lucky to have him alive and well this evening. I hope that next Saturday night she has her 16-year-old in the house at midnight.

More than likely the gator will spit a Yankee out.

That is my most fervent hope...  as a "damn Yankee" I have absolutely ZERO interest in spoiling the local cuisine or causing any honorable Southern gator to experience a bout of bad gas from unexpected digestive issues   :-)

As long as he doesn't take a quick swim over to his Optometrist's and get a stylish glass eye...   :-)

I think that if she doesn't it would be grounds for having her declared legally insane.

The gators near where you live are the 'stealth' variety....they are waiting for you to gain some weight before they designate you as a valid entree item   :-)

hurumph - yeah, round these parts, that woulda been the swimmin' hole for pansys.  Our swimmin' hole for real men has fresh water Great White Sharks, barracuda, 150 foot long giant anacondas and boas, and wandering the banks are occasional T-Rexes looking for a quick easy snack.

;^D
