Liberals who hurt own cause [ op-ed re UW Kevin Barrett ]
Boston Globe ^ | July 17, 2006 | Cathy Young

Posted on 07/22/2006 1:16:02 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

The latest in the academic follies comes from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where the administration has cleared the way for an instructor to teach his belief that the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were plotted by the US government to create an excuse for war... Kevin Barrett, an instructor at the University of Wisconsin and the head of something called the Muslim-Jewish-Christian Alliance for 9/11 Truth, thinks otherwise. On the group's website, he claims there is "compelling evidence" that the attacks were planned by the United States. This fall, Barrett is going to teach "Islam: Religion and Culture," a course in which he plans to present his theories to the students (along with the "official" version, which he calls a "big lie"). After he shared his views on the radio and in a newspaper interview, a controversy ensued, with some politicians demanding Barrett be fired... Mir Babar Basir, a recent University of Wisconsin graduate and former president of the Muslim Students Association, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that Barrett had many supporters, which was not surprising since "Madison is fairly liberal." But what exactly is "liberal" about the belief in bizarre conspiracy theories? If one wants to promote tolerance toward Muslims and counter the stereotypes that equate all Islam with terrorism, denying the link between Islamic fanaticism and Sept. 11 is hardly the way to go about it.

Another tidbit -- "It is particularly a stretch to believe that the Bush administration, given its track record in managing things like the Iraq War and the Hurricane Katrina response, could have pulled off a conspiracy so immense."

Barrett has assured him that students will be free to challenge his viewpoint

...in pretty much the same way that I myself am "free to challenge" the guy with the gun in my back who is leading an academically challenging discussion on the contents of my wallet.

something called the Muslim-Jewish-Christian Alliance for 9/11 Truth

Ever see a dozen "Jewish" or "Christian" guys named Abdul or Mohammed on the same continent? I'd bet this is the only place you ever will.

Liberals have a cause??? Well, other than just Marxism, absolute power and control, destruction of Constitutional America, and its freedoms and rights...

But other than those few minor objections, why do you oppose them so? Dang, you're so narrowminded.

And the fact that Barrett wasn't condemned is consistent with liberal politics, and so is blaming conservatives (and anyone else with sense) for equating liberals with Kevin Barrett and ilk.

That's about as crazy as:

When I was a child I was told about a frog which turned into a prince, and was told it was only a fairytale, but when I went to school I was told it was evolution. If people can swallow the myth of evolution, they can swallow anything.

How about an ice snake? We have ice snakes here in Tennessee. They only come out when it snows. An unsuspecting victim could be in the woods in winter when nature calls. When he pulls down his pants and squats down the ice snake wriggles into his colon. The snake is so cold the victim freezes to death.

Im so sick of hearing about Katrina. A liberal, socialist, stronghold was hit by a natural disaster, where welfare dependent people who have been relying on the taxpayers all their lives, were cluless to help themselves and they blame Bush?? Man, that whole thing p*sses me off..

I'm with that. 200,000 -- who chose to stay -- were stranded in the city after the storm hit. There's a topic around here from a Popular Mechanics story (March 2006) debunking the partisan hack-spawned Katrina myths.
