LANSING, Mich. - Michigan's unemployment rate rose slightly to 6.3 percent in June, state officials said Wednesday.

That's up from the 6.0 percent seasonally adjusted rate in May.

Michigan's unemployment rate remains above the national average, which was 4.6 percent in June.

The change in the state's jobless rate was "relatively minor," according to Rick Waclawek, director of the Department of Labor and Economic Growth's Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.

The size of the state's labor force increased by 23,000 in June. About 10,000 more people were counted as employed and 13,000 more were counted as unemployed than in May.

The state gained about 5,000 payroll jobs in June, according to a monthly survey of employers. That raises the level of payroll jobs to about 4.37 million.

About 7,000 jobs were gained in the government sector in June, the state said. About 3,000 jobs were gained in manufacturing and 2,000 were added in professional and business services.

About 3,000 jobs were lost in the trade, transportation and utilities segment of the economy.

In June 2005, the state's jobless rate was 6.7 percent.

Michigan has lost about 8,000 nonfarm payroll jobs since then, according to the state's employment estimates.

The heaviest-hit segment has been manufacturing, which had 18,000 fewer jobs last month than in June 2005. The state has an estimated 13,000 fewer retail trade jobs.

But in the past year, about 11,000 jobs have been added in professional and business services and about 10,000 have been added in education and health services.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Detroit-Warren-Livonia area increased to 6.6 percent in June.

That is up from 6.1 percent in May but down from 7.3 percent in June 2005.

The Marxist policies of Jennifer Granholm are driving this state to ruin.

It's wierd to think that the goal of the Federal Reserve policy is to keep unemployment between 4 and 6%

Bush's fault! He and Rove are driving jobs out of the states that voted for Kerry.

Oh God don't I know. The only companies that are highering around here are cold calling, door-to-door sales jobs.

The Marxist policies of Jennifer Granholm are driving this state to ruin.

I disagree with that assessment...Grandholm is pretty much a lame duck Governor...She of course, is Democrat...The House and Senate are Republican...

Based on the auto industry, Michigan was probably the largest industrial state in the country for years...So when industry started leaving the country for Mexico and China, Michigan was hardest hit...

Industry started leaving Michigan on a large scale under our former Republican Governor who by the way, loved Nafta and the WTO and the new, globalist, New World Order...In fact, he's now the President of the National Manufacturers Assoc., if I remember correctly...

Grandholm and the Republican State Congress, also globalists and Nafta/WTO supporters are just continuing on with the same anti-American policy as the previous administration...

I just met a guy who was laid off from GM in Detroit where he was making a cushy 6 figures. Boy was he shocked when he left socialism to come to the real world in North Carolina. Of course the real estate market in Michigan is depressed (there's no money and everyone's leaving) so he didn't get any cash from moving to a cheap housing area, and he's looking at up to a 50% pay cut in his next job.

Oh, and he blames Bush.

So when industry started leaving the country for Mexico and China

Of course the business climate in Michigan is a total joke, over-taxed, over-regulated, and of course unionized -- ever consider that have anything to do with its getting its butt kicked in the free market???

No, I guess it's easier to point fingers at foreigners and beg for protectionism.

She was giddy on the news the other day, when she said that google was coming to town in Ann Arbor and would be hiring 1000 employees. I thought that she was gonna pee her pants.

The resorters aren't coming up in droves this year. All the business' are hurting big time. Every other house is for sale or forclosed on. To sell out and move we'll have to take a HUGE loss(assuming we can sell at all)
This state sucks right now.

Not one single politician in this state ever tried to figure out how we could keep our heads afloat if push came to shove.

But lord knows they have time to figure out how to ban smoking in the work place!

Any residents have any impressions on what measures have been taken by the state to attract new employment?

Any residents have any impressions on what measures have been taken by the state to attract new employment?

I live in Michigan and here is my take. First, get rid of Jennifer.

I read a poll the other day that stated 40 percent of people polled, 800 total I think, have considered moving out of Michigan.

My real estate taxes keep going up every year and the state keeps telling me my home is worth more and raises my evaluation. I live in a rural area without the comfort of all the perks of the city life. For the last two years, I now have to pay taxes twice a year so the state and local can get their money from me sooner.

I hear about the 1000 jobs coming to Michigan from Goggle but I do not hear much about the millions of tax incentives that Goggle got to come. I read someplace that it totals about 38 million off the SBT over the next 20 or so years.

Speaking of SBT or single business tax. I talk to my friends who own small business. They are really hurting because of this tax. No one wants to invest in new ventures or hire new people because it is just too expensive to do so.

My take on Jenny is that someone else is pulling her strings and that she is not really into it but is a cute face that is being told what to do by others. She reminds me of Clinton. She promises everything but delivers on nothing.

Dick DeVoss at least has a plan. I am not sure of all the details yet but it is a plan.

The reason the American automakers are having it so hard is not foreign competition. When you approve union contract after union contract that gives huge benefits to workers and pass those cost on to the consumers of your product, you eventually get to the point where the consumer does not want to foot the bill. When you have workers sitting in a room getting paid to not work but just be there, this is added cost that must be absorbed. When people do not buy your cars anymore unless you discount their sticker price, then the company still pays these excess contract costs and there is a huge negative amount of money the companies and the share holders have to absorb.

There, that is at least part of my impression on what measure needs to be taken to attract new employment. I don't know the cure. I only suffer from the symptoms.

With that kind of environment, it sounds like 6.3% unemployment is an indicator that the state wants to do better, and that business people have been more loyal to the state than the state has been loyal to them.
