I'm sorry I'm late this weekend. Last week I compiled some music for my son to listen to as he rides in his jogging stroller (after all, mommy had her CD player). We rigged him some speakers and he's been enjoying his favorite tunes each day as mommy goes jogging.
This song was introduced in my favorite Walt Disney movie
Pinocchio. The Jiminy Crickett vocal is by Cliff Edwards and it won the Academy Award for Best Song in 1940.

Addenda: Tripoli gets its name from the Roman's Regio Tripoitana, Three Cities. Libya didn't exist at the time. There were city states. Outside the cities and ports was desert. (Actually, things haven't changed.)

The History of The Marines' Hymn
Following the war with the Barbary Pirates in 1805, when Lieutenant P.N. O'Bannon and his small force of Marines participated in the capture of Derne and hoisted the American flag for the first time over a fortress of the Old World, the Colors of the Corps was inscribed with the words: "To the Shores of Tripoli." After the Marines had participated in the capture and occupation of Mexico City and the Castle of Chapultepec, otherwise known as the "Halls of Montezuma," the words on the Colors were changed to read: "From the Shores of Tripoli to the Halls of Montezuma."
"From the Halls of Montezuma
To the Shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country's battles
On the land as on the sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
of United States Marine.
"Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in ev'ry clime and place
Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job--
The United States Marines.
"Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines."
The rest of the story!

Outside the cities and ports was desert. (Actually, things haven't changed.) I'll vouch for that...you don't have to go more than a few miles inland to start expecting to see that pair of jeeps the Rat Patrol used.

Christmas song? You are probably right, but it's one that is also suitable for all year. By the way, Words: Placide Cappeau, 1847 (Minuit, chrétiens, cest lheure solennelle); translated from French to English by John S. Dwight (1812-1893).
Music: Adolphe C. Adam (1803-1856) (MIDI, score). This is said to have been the first music ever broadcast over a radio.
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Saviors birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our Friend!
He knows our needto our weakness is no stranger.
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend!
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His Name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy Name!
Christ is the Lord! O praise His name forever!
His powr and glory evermore proclaim!
His powr and glory evermore proclaim!

Hey Jinxy!
At Monterey, met a FROGLing retread who spent a couple years in the Med and around Africa. The countries are huge, but everyone lives in a small place. The City Limits signs had real meaning.
