You may be thinking of the Battle of the Crater – a failed Yankee attack in their attempt to take Richmond.

I seem to recall reading of a large mine that went off, but the Union did not exploit the breach in the Confederate lines, as two division commanders were drunk in a dugout. Without order, the Union troops trickled into the crater where they were sitting ducks...

Any history buffs or a lurking VDH to comment? ;-)
