July 21, 2006 -- JERUSALEM - Israeli military commanders decided last night they must invade Lebanon to drive Hezbollah from Israel's border, officials revealed. Israel will send a large ground force across its northern border to carve out a Hezbollah-free zone at least 20 miles deep, they said.
Officials concluded that an invasion is necessary because the blistering air bombardment of Hezbollah targets over the last nine days won't be enough to force the guerrillas far enough away from the border so that they can no longer terrorize Israelis with rockets.
Senior Israeli military leaders met last night to determine the size of the fighting force to be used in the full-scale invasion, but held off making the final decision on when to send the troops in.
One of the aims of the ground assault to push Hezbollah north of the Litani River would be to send Iran and other Muslim states a strong message that they will pay a price for an attack across the border, like the Hezbollah raid that began the war on July 12. The terrorists abducted two Israeli soldiers during that incursion.
So far, Israel has mounted only pinpoint commando strikes north of the border - including one yesterday that triggered the fiercest firefight of the 9-day-old war.

I find it hard to believe they just figured this out last night.
Israel should head north and not stop until they see the lights of Gaziantep Turkey.
Are those missing soldiers still in Iran?
Here is wishing that the IDF kills every terrorist they encounter without conditions or reservations.
Hang in there Hezbollah, Condi is on her way to save you. /sarc
Go with our prayers, Israel.
Yahh, thats why within the first couple days of fighting, Israel called up all its reserves.
Because they were planning a big picnic in Tel Aviv.
Israel always holds stuff close to the chest. So when I saw on FOX this morning that row of tanks on that road, I thought, well Israel want's thouse pictures to be seen by the other side.
I pray for those brave Israelie troops who are going to clean up a mess nobody else in the world would take on!
Why are they being so circumspect?
That enemy territory could be invaded from almost any border and this enemy "bagged" on no time.
Israel should move swiftly and forcefully to anhillilate this enemy completely.
They didn't call up ALL the reserves. More were called up today.
exactly.
I'm not even sure they're still alive, are you?
When Abba Eban served as UN observer for Israel before the partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish sections, another diplomat observed that 6,000,000 dead Jews had purchased two years of acceptance. This comment confirmed their evaluations the WW II slaughter of Jews had been regarded as a source of embarrassment, rather than grief. However, perceiving the holocaust magnitude requires knowing there were only 9,000,000 Jews in Europe. Our equivalent world-view would currently arise from the murder, incineration, and consignment to landfills of 200,000,000 citizens.
Israel fought three wars to cease-fires, not victories, against enemies committed to its extinction. Anwar Sadat enfeebled this coalition when the Egypt/Israel peace treaty removed a major source of expendable human currency to satisfy the vicarious hatred of certain Arab constituencies.
Though unable to currently contrive annihilation, implacable enemies still surround. Expect diminished Israeli anxiety with a world opinion finding concern with the price of oil and comfort in a style of peace accommodating the moderate killing of Jews. Their puzzling intransigence and seeming excessive response results from determination rooted within an endless cavern of National Socialist and Islamic Fundamentalist experience.
The muzzies have tunneled under all the major roads and routes and have massive --- as in WWI scale 50,000lb bombs --- pre-positioned in tunnels along and under routes.
Whole city blocks will explode at once.
The brits did the same thing to the germans in WWI.
It is pretty dramatic, but only works once.
Just watch. I hope to Israelis recall this tactic.
