Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said yesterday that he hopes world oil prices will not rise any higher but accused the US of stoking geopolitical tensions behind the rally.
Chavezs comments came in a speech inaugurating a new subway line in the capital of Caracas, during which he also pledged to divert any new revenues from surging oil prices to social and infrastructure development.
He also said that he plans to enter into a joint venture with China to manufacture oil drills, instead of buying them from US companies.
The worlds fifth-largest oil exporter, Venezuela sells most of its oil to the US, but Chavez has sought to reduce that dependency as relations between the two nations soured in recent years.
At the same time, he has worked to strengthen relations with China. The South American country presently sells 160,000 barrels a day of crude and diesel to China and aims to nearly double that to 300,000 barrels a day by the end of the year.

"The US is forcing me to raise my prices."
This fools's act is really getting old. Shouldn't he be feeding daisies by now?
The headline should read:
"Chavez Blames His Hatred Of The U.S. On Why He Is Raising Oil Prices"
P.S.
I hope the Chinese knock-offs disappoint Hugie!
BOYCOTT CITGO
In another couple of years the technology will be there that will collapse OPEC economies. Than the third world can run on cheap gas.
Seems to me that ole Chavez could just sell the Venezuelan oil he has now nationalized (i.e. stolen) for $30 a barrel if this situation is of concern to him.
Not only did he fall out of the ugly tree, but then someone hit him with a dumb stick.
He's working on that in Venezuela. Due to his price controls, gas sells around ~0.20/gal there. Gas station owners therefore can't turn a profit, so just give it time to work....
He's doing for Venezuela what Mugabe did for Zimbabwe.
