Lt. Col's Letter re Iraq: "I'm Tired"
StrategyPage.Com ^ | 7/20/06 | LtCol Joe Repya, USA

"I'm Tired"

Two weeks ago, as I was starting my sixth month of duty in Iraq, I was forced to return to the USA for surgery for an injury I sustained prior to my deployment. With luck, I'll return to Iraq to finish my tour.

I left Baghdad and a war that has every indication that we are winning, to return to a demoralized country much like the one I returned to in 1971 after my tour in Vietnam. Maybe it's because I'll turn 60 years old in just four months, but I'm tired:

I'm tired of spineless politicians, both Democrat and Republican who lack the courage, fortitude, and character to see these difficult tasks through.

I'm tired of the hypocrisy of politicians who want to rewrite history when the going gets tough.

I'm tired of the disingenuous clamor from those that claim they 'Support the Troops' by wanting them to 'Cut and Run' before victory is achieved.

I'm tired of a mainstream media that can only focus on car bombs and casualty reports because they are too afraid to leave the safety of their hotels to report on the courage and success our brave men and women are having on the battlefield.

I'm tired that so many Americans think you can rebuild a dictatorship into a democracy over night.

I'm tired that so many ignore the bravery of the Iraqi people to go to the voting booth and freely elect a Constitution and soon a permanent Parliament.

I'm tired of the so called 'Elite Left' that prolongs this war by giving aid and comfort to our enemy, just as they did during the Vietnam War.

I'm tired of antiwar protesters showing up at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. A family who's loved ones gave their life in a just and noble cause, only to be cruelly tormented on the funeral day by cowardly protesters is beyond shameful.

I'm tired that my generation, the Baby Boom - Vietnam generation, who have such a weak backbone that they can't stomach seeing the difficult tasks through to victory.

I'm tired that some are more concerned about the treatment of captives than they are the slaughter and beheading of our citizens and allies.

I'm tired that when we find mass graves it is seldom reported by the press, but mistreat a prisoner and it is front page news.

Mostly, I'm tired that the people of this great nation didn't learn from history that there is no substitute for Victory.

Sincerely, Joe Repya, Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. Army, 101st Airborne Division

We all need to ask ourselves what we are doing and what more we can do so heroes like Joe Repya know this isn't a repeat of Vietnam.

God bless our troops!

Sometimes I find it useful to read Ernie Pyle. It gives me perspective- and clarifies my thinking.

Here's something from him in April, 1943 in Tunisia.

From Ernie Pyle (April, 1943)

In this one respect the front-line soldier differs from all the rest of us. All the rest of us - you and me and even the thousands of soldiers behind the lines in Africa - we want terribly yet only academically for the war to get over. The front-line soldier wants it to be got over by the physical process of his destroying enough Germans to end it. He is truly at war. The rest of us, no matter how hard we work, are not.

.........I heard of a high British officer who went over this battlefield just after the action was over. American boys were still lying dead in their foxholes, their rifles still grasped in firing position in their dead hands. And the veteran English soldier remarked time and again, in a sort of hushed eulogy spoken only to himself:

"Brave men. Brave men."

Could we get Tony Snow to push for leaflets with FR's website address to get dropped over military bases in Iraq?

. At his age, it is unlikely that he is serving on Active Duty. There is a remote possibility that he could have been recalled to AD because of some special skill.

Actually I worked the numbers, if he started as an enlisted member, and had a break in service of 4-6 years, he could easily be 60 years old and still on active duty.

In any event, he's for real. Either that, or he's "stolen" the real LTC. Repka's identity. I just checked on the AKO white pages.

It's one of the tactics being used by Code Pink, and other sleazy groups.

It's not Code Pink, it's the Westboro KS cult (Fred Phelps).

Gosh, how we could use an Ernie Pyle. Desparately so.

Thanks, Mom.

Tommy
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees! - Rudyard Kipling

The esteemed Colonel speaks universal truths. I, too, am tired. There is so much "bad news", yet, on closer examination, I have to ask "WHY"? The economy is doing quite well, the war on terror, according to those who REALLY know is going well (and just as the President said it would), we've suffered no further terrorist attacks, on and on...... Just WHY are we "demoralized"? By all TRUE accounts, we should be having it pretty good.

Is it the lamestream media at work again or the naysaying Democrap Party? What would happen if we all started "talking up" just how good Americans really do have it? I find it just as "tiring" that Americans don't even know when things are happening to their advantage and they remain so foolishly unappreciative!

Me, I'm going to pray about the things that require divine intervention and then I'm going to thank the Good Lord, big time, for all the wonderful blessings I enjoy as an American!

Gladly you are incorrect. I have met the man, he is real.

He volunteered to go back

Check the info in the link in posts 38 & 40. And contrary to what was written he didn't "sell" the Support our Troops signs. He gladly accepted donations to help cover his costs but he gave away lots and lots of them to people who wanted them. I still see them daily as I drive to/from work. I've listened to interviews with him on local talk radio.

He really is one of the good guys.

His leaders don't deserve him. On the ironic side, if all goes well and Iraq's democracy is established perhaps one day her military men will also have the joy of dealing with the inconstancy of a democratic system mired in ideological partisanship.
