They were talking about these (larger versions) a few years ago as rescue vehicles for hiigh-rise buildings. The can touch right up against the building since the rotors are protected.

They would be nifty for shipboard operations, too. They will need a lot less flight deck for rotor clearence, and would eliminate the chance of some gristly accidents.

It's interesting, but if the top is sealed, where are the intakes for the rotorflow?

With "fly by wire" technologies and the gyros used by the Segway, I am surprised such a vehicle is already on the market.

And since this vehicle doesn't have exposed blades or rotors, a safety chute (or two) with a jettison device would be perfect for those pesky but rare incidents of engine failure.

The top isn't sealed. The rotors are covered with some sort of permeable shroud/venetian blind arrangement. The contrast in the graphic above is too low to make out the details.

The correct term for a vehicle such as this is "aerodyne", by the way.

Let's hope the eventual nickname for this craft is "sunny side up" instead of "over easy".

I've been told for the last 30 years that, one day, I would fly to work like George Jetson, but what have I gotten? Pffft...bupkis!

No more stalling. I want my flying car and I want it NOW.

Very cool concept...I wish them much success.

Mollers SkyCar

The very same non-functioning mockup of which has been teasing me from the cover of Popular Mechanics since ca. 1990?

I believe it's really a grid (think chain link fence), not really "sealed."

I don't know.
The ability to hover is based on disc loading. The two discs in the picture aren't very big so it must be extremely light weight.
There does not appear to be an airfoil so lift in forward flight would have to be from the brute force of the downward flow of air. This is extremely inefficient (think of the fuel consumption of a Harrier in hover).
BTW, This is in no way a "helicopter". It appears to be a VTOL based on ducted fans.
I wish them luck but this is similar to what has been tried before.
