LAS VEGAS (AP) - Israel's general consul to the Southwest told a sympathetic audience Wednesday that his country has the moral high ground in its war against Hezbollah, and vowed Israel won't stop fighting until it has destroyed the group.
"We will win because we are good and they are evil," Ehod Danoch said to applause from a crowd of about 200 people at a Jewish synagogue in Las Vegas. "We will win because we always came in peace and they came with a call for the destruction of the state of Israel."
Israel launched its military campaign against Hezbollah on July 12 after the group captured two Israeli soldiers.
The retaliation has taken a heavy toll on neighboring Lebanon, and the country's prime minister, Fuad Saniora, denounced Israel's actions Wednesday. Saniora said 300 people in Lebanon have died in the violence so far, 1,000 have been wounded and a half-million displaced.
"Can the international community stand by while such callous retribution by the state of Israel is inflicted on us?" he asked.
Danoch said Israeli soldiers are doing everything they can to minimize civilian casualties, but that it is difficult because Hezbollah fires on Israel from back yards and prevents the residents from fleeing when Israel responds.
He also said Israel's response was justified, calling Hezbollah's abduction of its soldiers and its rocket attacks "acts of war."
"If the international community will not make an end to the Hezbollah, we will make an end to the Hezbollah," he said. "We are after the terrorists and we will be after them until Israel will be 100 percent, from all the world, secure."
Danoch also urged anyone thinking of visiting Israel not to change their plans because of the violence. He said much of the country is unaffected by the fighting, which is mainly taking part in the north and south.
"It's important for (visitors) to come to show their solidarity and support," he said.
Pinging...

Welcome to FR, Mr. Kirschen.
...interesting--evil (ra). But could a lack of resistance to yetzer hara instill a kind of pride (vanity) that goes before defeat?
In other words, could it be that the terrorists practice much unfounded pride without reason, and that such unbased pride is an adjunct of their learned hatreds? Could it be that their overage of pride without reason might cause them to understimate their enemies (Israel and the USA--us), to start the war without being prepared enough, and to commit other errors?
Could it be that the sages possessed wisdom that many of us (nations and all) haven't explored fully enough?
I'm not advising, moreh, but only suggesting and asking.
Are they posting odds?
