You have to wonder how many of these tunnels cross the border.

Looks like both sides had plans. Obviously they are not Democrats. But that being said. This could be a bloody run for Israel. Keep them in your prayers Freepers!

Hey, Olmert and other "Kum-bay-ah" lefties:

What possible peaceful purpose is there in a network of underground bunkers?

Hint: Time to come to the light...

Cheers!

More of Nasrallah's promised "surprises". That's why the IDF isn't storming into South Lebanon, guns blazing. Its honeycombed with tunnels and booby-trapped. Israel does not want to face massive casualties in the rear if she has to send in a ground force. So they've been doing reconaissance work and they don't like what they've seen. Its going to considerably longer before Israel sends in a large ground force than any one expected.

(Go Israel, Go! Slap 'Em, Down Hezbullies.)

Hezbollah is claiming that Israel did not bomb a bunker, that it was "mosque under construction"...time to start bombing these MUCs.

fortified underground bunkers some 40 meters (roughly 120 feet) underground

During the first gulf war, Iraq was said to have similar bunkers that could hold a battalion. Built by British engineers and blah blah blah.
Fortified caves and covered trenches maybe with a Saddam pit I might believe. But not this as described in the article.

Cant Israel somehow locate the "in" and "out" corridors to these tunnels/bunkers, and then demolish the entrances under tons of tubble.

Unless there are numerous secret entrance-ways and exits, one would think that the IDF could sort of trap the rats inside the bunkers, and then feed in poison gas or something.

Maybe I've seen too many movies, but that seems like one option that could save the precious lives of Israeli soldiers.

Senior Northern Command officer tells Ynet that soldiers killed in Lebanon Wednesday were part of mission aimed at uncovering 40-meter deep poured concrete bunkers along border. [emphasis: mine]
That, along with reports that 1500 rockets have been launched into Israel over the course of last week, in addition to very credible assertions that the Hizzy's possess upwards of an additional 12K missiles is very very telling to me who is running the show in Lebanon.

If an AN/TPQ-37 & 43 net was implemented, along with the necessary artillery counterstrike system to be em-placed, Israel could sufficiently counterstrike at "arms length".

It is my understanding that a minimum of 15 155mm shells would be required to neutralize (30% reduction of combat effectiveness) 1 hectare (2.147 acres). If the objective was enhanced degradation of enemy capabilities beyond neutralization, then upwards of 100 shells would be required.

Given the fire rate of howitzer and cannon artillery fire-teams, I believe that would be apropos as it concerns the threat Israeli civilians face. It should be understood that the Hezzy's consider all of Israel's population to be "combatants." Well, what's good for gandering is good for goosing too, eh?

Surely Israel had high-altitude and satellite reconnaissance of the bunker construction. It also sounds like they have moles, since they claimed to know the location of Sheikh Nassafras or whatever his name is.

Ultrasound can be focused through the ground.

It can literally boil water (or people).

As for finding the tunnels, ask Shell engineers.

Like the Maginot Line, or the Kuwait/Saudi border in Iraq 1.....cut off the supply lines, then wait for them to stick their heads up...meanwhile doing quick strikes at targets of opportunity...problem is, need to be sure any missile launchers that pop up get taken out before they can fire. I can't see the Hez being too patient down there. You'd think they'd be in a hurry to pop up and make martyrs of themselves, the virgins are waiting.

This is a Maginot line, best approach is to go around it ... or in other words, send a piercing armor column in 10 miles surround it, so hezbollah gets no resupply or reinforcement, cut off communications, then take your time taking it out one by one...

This wont be a short war.
