How curious. I'm a life-long deep-rooted conservative (not just Republican), and I see this presidency as having made more long term progress for the cause of conservatism than any previous presidency (and yes, I include Reagan's in that).

If for no other reason, judges.

The movement of the entire country to the right because of conservative judges is already palpable.

There's a good reason the left hates President Bush. He's accomplishing conservative goals.

At the same time, he is instituting even further growth of government and its intrusion into citizens' lives.

I share your history, but not your evaluation. Quite the opposite. Reagan had the Senate for a while. He had an aggressive, dirty House, similar to the Democrats in the House today. He fought unbelievable odds.

Bush has had almost everything outside his control go his way. Let's face it, 911 gave him carte blanche, as Clinton implied early on when he complained that the attack didn't happen on his watch.

I cannot in good conscience call Bush a liberal or socialist, because of the things you allude to. But I can see no way a rational person can call him a conservative, due to the horrendous things I allude to. And those things are completing the destruction of the Goldwater ->Reagan Conservative movement, which destruction was started by GHWB. We can debate whether GWB's moral image is well-grounded or whether it is political expedience, but the real problem is that he HAS to philosophy and is ideologically baseless. It's apparent that, witness the immigration speech, he can blow smoke as well as anyone, excluding Clinton.
