Their company, their dollar, their choice.
I personally always get non-smoking rooms. The smoking rooms seem to have an "odor" to them that is rather unpleasant.

I agree, I am a smoker and normally get smoking rooms when I travel but it is their company and their choice. I will still stay at Marriott's provided they don't treat me like a leper in place the new smoking area behind the kitchen dumpster.

Their company, their dollar, their choice. Yep. Free enterprise.

People smoke in no smoking rooms all the time.

As a smoker, you would find this hard to believe, I don't like the lingering odor either. I would always get a non-smoking room and smoke outside. At home, I don't smoke inside either, I have young children and don't like the smell in my house. Now if I could figure out a way to keep the smell off my clothes, that would be awesome.
I need to quit smoking, I only smoke 10 to 15 cigarettes a day anyway, and I don't like the way it makes me feel anymore, I just haven't had the willpower to do it yet.

We spent a night in downtown Zurich. Got a smoking room and couldn't be moved since rooms were all booked and city was filled up - lots of stuff going on there all the time. It was horrible because when we took our showers the heat somehow opened up the pores in the walls and just let this hideous smoking odor invade the room. I was choking all night long; we left the windows (no screens) wide open and just endured the traffic sounds. It was the worst night I ever spent, ever. I think Marriott's decision is a good one.
