A DOCTOR accused of performing an illegal abortion told her receptionist she had "done something silly" when police first turned up at her surgery, a Sydney court was told today.
Doctor Suman Sood allegedly made the comment to her receptionist, Joan Chodat, the day after a woman gave birth to a four months premature baby boy.
The 20-year-old woman had sought an abortion at Dr Sood's Fairfield clinic, the NSW Supreme Court has been told.
On May 20, 2002, Dr Sood allegedly gave her the drug prostaglandin in preparation for a termination.
But the woman gave birth the next day to a baby who survived only a few hours.
Police investigating the baby's death arrived at Dr Sood's clinic on May 22 to execute a search warrant, the jury heard.
Giving evidence today, Ms Chodat said Dr Sood was "very surprised" the police were there.
"She came behind the reception desk and she said she'd done something silly," Ms Chodat told the court.
When Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC asked whether Dr Sood said what it was, Ms Chodat replied: "No, she didn't, and I didn't ask".
Dr Sood, 56, has pleaded not guilty to the baby's manslaughter and to unlawfully giving the woman a drug to procure her miscarriage.
Abortion is legal in NSW if a doctor believes continuing the pregnancy would endanger the mother's life or wellbeing, but it is alleged that Dr Sood failed to assess this woman's health or mental state.
Dr Sood denies giving the woman prostaglandin or agreeing to terminate her pregnancy.
The trial continues.
@0 years behind bars should give her plenty of time to regret her actions...
My math shows this baby was 23 weeks along. Isn't that the limit for late term murders errr abortions here in the states?
We certainly shouldn't judge her - any of us might up and decide to murder a newborn for profit.
What she needs is a big hug and maybe a box of chocolates.
