U.S. Rescue Bogs Down in Lebanon

BEIRUT — Thousands of Americans whose vacations and business trips to Lebanon have degenerated with sickening speed into stints in a battle zone remained stranded here under Israeli bombardment Monday, their frustration and anger mounting because the U.S. government hasn't gotten them out faster.

Waiting around Beirut with bags packed and fingers crossed, U.S. citizens derided the embassy for busy phone lines, a lack of information and gnawing uncertainty over when and whether they will get out. Hundreds were expected to be shipped to Cyprus today, but how long the full evacuation will take remains uncertain.

Thank you, twig. I can think of one issue (flamewar) I've been involved in in my 8 years here. But when I see freeper deliberately lie and mischaracterize for someone, I stick up for the (missing and unable to defend himself) freeper.

I'm concerned too and can't imagine having bombs fall all around me wondering if the next bomb will be on my hotel.

The State Department should have had something on their web site posting updates of information and when a rescue would be attempted and as of yesterday, they hadn't even done that. Since they're nearly impossible to reach by phone, it's a good thing Rebel had a retired ambassador friend who helped him out.

I have a feeling that there are a lot of issues surrounding this rescue that the State Dept is dealing with of which we have no idea. IIRC, many of the people demanding rescue, though Americans, are not supportive of America. I think the US needs to take a lot of care with this--not to mention the logistics of it. OTOH, if I was there like RY2, I wouldn't care much of anything except to get my behind out--in one piece.

Some folk carry grudges a long time. I don't normally wind up on threads that you are on, and I'm never on threads that she is on. However, I do recall that we all ended up on the Terri threads, and one of the three of us was really, really obnoxious. Extremely obnoxious.
