U.S. Rescue Bogs Down in Lebanon
LATimes ^ | July 18, 2006 | Megan K. Stack

BEIRUT — Thousands of Americans whose vacations and business trips to Lebanon have degenerated with sickening speed into stints in a battle zone remained stranded here under Israeli bombardment Monday, their frustration and anger mounting because the U.S. government hasn't gotten them out faster.

Waiting around Beirut with bags packed and fingers crossed, U.S. citizens derided the embassy for busy phone lines, a lack of information and gnawing uncertainty over when and whether they will get out. Hundreds were expected to be shipped to Cyprus today, but how long the full evacuation will take remains uncertain.

And yet, somehow the French were able to rescue more people than the US to date. That's just a fact. Inconvenient I know.

That's funny. Hubby's first suggestion when I told him of this was, "Start walking North." This was days ago when the first thread was posted. I was a bit ignorant of geography at that point. Yesterday, I told him of the continuing saga. I asked, "Where is Syria?" He said, "To the North." In other words, he would have headed to Syria as soon as this started. Have we heard anything about any IMF contingency being taken hostage? Nope. They're probably all home by now.

Several of us have gotten freepmail from Rebel but somehow, if he doesn't respond to each and every post on the open forum, some freepers have taken that to mean he doesn't actually want help or suggestions. You know, because he just MUST be lying about where he is.

Bah. It doesn't reflect well on Free Republic when freepers treat each other the way they've treated Rebel.

He freeped mailed me last night , & said he isn't anti Israel . He is frustrated because of the blockade & that he can't get out. If I was In Lebanon I would want out too , & I would hope for encouraging posts by fellow freepers . He contributed To George Bush's Re-election campaign , & has been a freeper since 1998 . I feel everyone has the right to question situations that their in.

I've said my piece and have noted which freepers haven't got a single solitary Christian bone in their bodies, despite their holier than thou attitudes.

I don't expect you to admit saying that, or to tell the truth about what it means. I learned long ago what to expect of you, and you've never let me down.

I have a news flash for you. It is possible to love God and Country at the same time. It is possible to disagree with someone who blames the USA and Israel for a situation that was created by terrorists (and willingly walked into by them) and still be a Christian. It is possible to send up genuine prayers for someone's safety and well being, without agreeing with everything they say. It is possible to be a Christian without being full of the hatred I see you display on an almost daily basis. And it is possible to be a Christian without demanding that all Christians should have your failings.

In fact, I would place his actions (on this and other threads) as no different than letting out a complaint while standing in line at the DMV. The clerks at the DMV are American. "WHAT ARE YOU, ANTI-AMERICAN???" "You should have known better than to go to the DMV on a Friday afternoon, you deserve what you get, and if you complain about the wait, YOU'RE ANTI-AMERICAN!"

I think CindyDawg is right, the Katrina Victims caused us to be hyper-defensive about ANY US evac operations. Everybody just needs to calm down.

Yeah, I know. Syria, France and Lebanon are the good guys. Israel and USA are the bad guys. Anyone who doesn't agree isn't a real Christian. Got it.

rebel_yell2 doesn't blame the Usa or Israel .

He stated in his prior posts he would be glad to stay in Lebanon for 6+ months if Hizzoblah is dismantled.

rebel_yell2 STATED in his prior posts He wants Iran & Syria Cut Off At The Head !!

rebel_yell2 wishes their wasn't a blockade so he can get to Safety !

He told me he's not anti-Isreal just frustated that because of the blockade he been stuck there .

Well, he didn't send me the same FReepmails. All I had to go on were his posts. And I do take issue with his inaccurate portrayals of the parties involved. He has spoken very negatively about the USA and her allies, while praising her enemies.

I'm giving a courtesy ping on this post, but not every time I talk about rebel_yell2. I'm sure he'll read the whole thread in due time.

In no way would I question anyone's Christian bonafides (in fact as a Christian, I'm commanded NOT to do that). But I do feel free to rebuke any Christian whose behavior does not reflect well on Christ.

We are never, EVER to come across as finger-waggers, even as we point out error and sin. Look at Christ's behavior with the adultress, or the woman at the well, or the Rich Young Man. He was very direct, he was not afraid to point out sins "...in fact, the man you are now with is not your husband..." . However, the text makes it clear that Jesus didn't shove it in their faces, he didn't belittle them; you do not picture Jesus screaming and wagging his finger when pointing out sin. In fact, quite the opposite.

When a person screws up, even if they won't admit it at first, our job as representatives of Christ is not to Accuse, but to say, "Ive screwed up more times than I can count. Thank goodness I've learned a better way".

A few have posted here with the latter attitude, most have chosen the former. It is NOT very Christ-like.

"under Israeli bombardment"?

What about Hizzbollah's rockets? They are not lethal?

I'm only saying what my husband said he would do. I wouldn't go to Lebanon! But I don't see much difference in going to one or the other. There had to be some pretty good $$$$ incentive to go to work for the IMF in Lebanon in the first place. Just as there would be to take a job in any Middle Eastern country. (my husband could probably convince me to go just about anywhere WITH him. And he wouldn't expect a bureaucracy to fish him out. Of course, that might be what would happen, but he wouldn't expect it.)

Now that I think about it, I would head to Syria if that is where the world government body for which I worked was going. I don't think they went on planes. No airport. Israel took care of that one. But I bet once they got to Syria, they headed to the airport and went home.

I agree. And if you read my posts, you will see that I was not screaming, or judging. I just happen to have a stalker who can't let it drop. She has repeatedly accused me of not being a Christian, because I don't share her desire to kill disabled people. It's sad, but what can you do?

lol

As a believer, I put my trust in God, and I take the path He offers. Sometimes it requires more faith than I believe I have. Sometimes I rebel. And that leads to more trouble. Thank God for second chances! And third and fourth . . . .

That would be right in character for you, wouldn't it?

No it wouldn't. Just knock it off. A fellow freeper is in trouble and now's not the time to start a flaming war here.

Most of us wouldn't be here, if not for 2nd chances.

I'm still chalking Rebel's statements up to stress and lack of sleep. I'm just wondering what excuse some other folks have for their poor behavior.
