WASHINGTON - Black Americans should end "victim-like thinking" and seize opportunities to help close gaps between the nation's rich and poor, NAACP president Bruce S. Gordon said Monday.

Gordon's comments were part of his first keynote convention speech as head of the Baltimore-based civil rights group. The 97th annual meeting of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is meeting at a convention center through Thursday.

Closing the gap between rich and poor, so this means no more Bill Gateses?

"Improve the situation of the poor" would be a more sensible way to put it.

Ruh Roh, what will Jessie Jackson do if he can't be a Race Pimp anymore?

Maybe he could get one of those jobs American's aren't willing to do.

You are probably right. For the NAACP this is a major step but we all know that many (most) of it's members love playing the victim.

Time will tell but I would not bet against you.

The head of the NAACP starts off by saying they should end "victim-like thinking". Then he goes right to blaming white America for keeping blacks from voting and taking Democracy away from them.

"We have values, we vote our values, and we demand to be valued in return," he said.

Which Africa-Americans would these be? The ones who vote a straight Dim ticket and get 50 years of poverty, victimhood and misery in return?

Well this is something different. A president of the NAACP that finally gets it. I'm sure Jesse is going to boycott him.

So many cities have black mayors, black city council members, black school board members, black superintendents of schools, black police chiefs, black owned businesses, etc. If being in positions of authority were going to solve the problemns of black America, we should see some examples in some of our cities with black leadership. If being able to vote for whom they want, being in control of the city government, law enforcement, schools, etc. were the keys to solving the problems of black America, we would see cities such as Detroit and Baltimore and Cleveland and Washington being well run cities, with low crime rates, no police brutality, public schools with waiting lists for suburban students clamoring for admission, and prosperous businesses run by blacks providing jobs for the residents of these cities.

Well to me it is a step in the right direction.

I'm certainly not going to pretend that the NAACP will get start moving helter skelter toward common sense and personal responsibility...but you have to start somewhere.

...yeah, like Bill Cosby, he makes too much sense....and taking the hard road like non victim thinking may be just too tough for most of the "I'm a victim" NAACP patrons....

Saw the press conference and all they did was smear Bush. They invite Bush again this year but if Bush is not there then he is not their President. I think I saw on Fox News with Britt.

Bond said Bush's presence would show that he hears the concerns of African-Americans. "We have values, we vote our values, and we demand to be valued in return," he said.

Bond urged lawmakers to raise the minimum wage, condemned attacks on school integration and said the war in Iraq "has weakened rather than strengthened America's defenses, including our levees."

He added: "Our troops may be fighting to secure democracy abroad, but we can't secure our democracy at home."

Just another leftie. "Attacks on school integration," btw, are attacks on racial preferences. In other words, "racism is fine as long as it helps us. Don't mess with affirmative action!"

Read the article. That headline is window dressing. The substance of his speech says that he wants the same stuff the NAACP has wanted for years: higher minimum wage, affirmative action, etc. This "don't think like a victim" stuff basically means "these 'we are victims' policies are now within our grasp."

Same garbage, different day, different packaging. The headline was spun to appeal to conservatives.
