Pyongyang's protectors are reviving Tokyo's military power. Sunday, July 16, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT No one knows how long it would take Japan to go nuclear, though estimates are days or weeks. But for 60 years Japan has refrained from becoming a nuclear power and remained militarily quiescent. That particular sun may be rising again, however, thanks to the support by China and South Korea for the military threats of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il. This is the meaning of a remarkable, but underreported, comment last week that Japan might want to knock out North Korea's missile bases with a pre-emptive military strike. "If we accept that there is no other option to prevent an attack . . .

This is perfect. When I first heard of taking the cuffs off of Japan, I was all for it.
Japan has enough resources to develop a more than decent military capablity. It would also allow Japan to contribute to it's own protection.
Japan is close to Korea and China. They wouldn't need world class ICBMs to be a threat to both of those countries.
China had some issues with Japan back around 1940. I think China would be willing to slap down N. Korea to keep from awaking the Japanese power.
Nice.
Works for me. BONZAIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!
Robert?
We give them the fissle material neccessary for a nuke...they have one within a couple of weeks. If they use their own design.
hey, make that "Banzai." "Bonsai" is a cute little tree.
Yes. Unlike other countries seeking nukes, Japan already has far more technology than it would take to build them, they just choose not to right now.
What's wrong with that?
Seems to me that if Japan had any will to do so, they could become the world's second most powerful military by a pretty wide margin. China should think about that. Of course, so should we.
They already have a delivery system, thanks to their space program.
They already have fissile material, thanks to their nuclear power program.
They already have all the technology and non-fissile material needed to make a nuke, thanks to their industrial power.
They already have nuclear weapons plans, thanks to us. (Speculating on this one - doesn't matter, they could figure it out in days starting from zero).
The only thing they don't have is a fully-armed nuclear device. Yet.
I sure have mixed feelings about this based on my knowledge of Japan's history. On the other hand, I would like to see the Japanese take care of N. Korea and then join us (and our other allies including Israel)in an all out effort to eradicate all the terrorist organizations around the world. Just imagine what the Japanese and Israeli soldiers could accomplish together.
Um, that is a small tree, not a battle cry. Try Banzai...
Your link shows you're worried over something that happened long ago. They aren't the same people. The govt. is actually accountable, now.
If freedom loving people don't stand together, we'll hang separately. The chicoms and every other hater of freedom will see to it.
I suspect Japan keeps nuclear weapons "on the shelf" so-to-speak, in parts, for a quick assembly as needed.
