WA: Gregoire sends Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez $50 million bill
Seattle P-I (AP) ^ | 7/17/06 | RACHEL LA CORTE

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Gov. Chris Gregoire sent an invoice of nearly $50 million to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Monday, saying the federal government needs to reimburse the state for the cost of housing criminal illegal immigrants.

Gregoire said that even though it's the federal government's responsibility to incarcerate illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, the state has been doing it for years. From July 2004 to June 2005, Gregoire said the state paid more than $27 million to house 995 prisoners. The Department of Justice has only reimbursed the state $1.7 million, and still owes $25.3 million.

She's seeking an additional $24.4 million reimbursement for the months from July 2005 to this May.

Gregoire said that the states have been forced to pick up cuts in Medicaid and homeland security and shouldn't have to shoulder the incarceration costs.

"If we're going to continue to see nothing but cuts come our way, and accountability measures for us, then I think turnaround is fair play," Gregoire said. "They have to live up to their responsibility and we need to hold them accountable."

In the letter to Gonzales, Gregoire asked that the federal government repay the state by Aug. 1, or take custody of the prisoners.

"I can't put these people free on the street," she said. "Public safety is at risk here. They're holding us accountable in every respect. It's high time the states said we too are going to hold you accountable."

Gregoire said she talked with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano about the immigrant incarceration issue at the Western Governors' Association meeting in Arizona last month.

"We, all three, agreed that we were going to take action," she said.

Last year, Napolitano sent invoices to Gonzales seeking nearly $118 million for unreimbursed costs. She received a response from the Justice Department which said the department didn't have enough money in its State Criminal Alien Assistance Program budget to reimburse state and local governments for all costs.

The Justice Department did not return a phone call seeking comment Monday

I agree with it. The Open Borders Lobby U.S Senate thinks illegals are a vote bonanza. Just wait til they get stuck with the bill.

.....yeah....but is this case she is right....good lord, in Calif we spend billions on the illegals the FEDS seems incapable of handling at the border....it is first and foremost a federal issue but they just pawn it off and look the other way as the states have to pick up the slack....BS in my opinion

Gov. Chris Gregoire is doing this for no higher purpose than criticizing a Republican Congress and "W".

Otherwise, she's one of the people all in favor of padding the voting rolls with legions of illegal aliens. Remember, she was heavily involved in a vote fraud scandal in her last election where she persuaded Democrat judges to allow her to keep recounting the votes until she won.

Strange that she's suddenly concerned about fiscal issues:

U.S. senator wants to know why Medicaid funded sex operations
WASHINGTON — The head of the Senate Finance Committee wants Gov. Christine Gregoire to explain why the state's Medicaid system is paying for erectile implants, sex-change operations and breast enlargements...

Yes, it's BS, but it's a very caclulated type of BS. First, it's the federal government's purview to handle illegal immigration, but of course they don't. Next, judges strike down common-sense legislation like ID cards proving citizenship. Police are prohibited from asking suspects their "immigration status"; illegals are afforded in-state tuition prices at universities, a "free and public" education, compulsory - means that children are required to be educated at the taxpayers expense. I could go on, and on - but you get the idea. If anyone is starting to think this is all planned, you're exactly correct. It's all part and parcel of the method of diluting what it means to be a citizen (ever hear that word much, outside of the illegal debate?) what it means to be an American...

So the fraud liberal gov. of Wa. is moaning about the cost of illegals now....looks like a little reality has come home to roost where the $$ counts...I guess your vaulted gas tax wont foot the bills ay?

By the way Sen Dimbulb Reid....your bill in 1994 was right on but you hypocritacly turned face for political reasons.
SHame on you too US worthless Senate for not protecting the USA from illegals. SHame on you all.

Just who do you think is going to pay this "Bill"? The AMERICAN taxpayers maybe? Send them all back...once. If they return shoot them. Problem solved.

If anyone is going to be sending a bill it should be the real governor of Washington and it is not Gregoire.

Pretty damn sad if the Fed decides to seal the border and it does it, not to protect ordinary Americans, not to make sure that some of the folks coming in aren't riff-raff, not because they are concerned about security here, but BECAUSE IT'S HITTING THEM IN THE POCKETBOOK!

What the heck is the difference anyways? They'll just print more cash and SADDLE YOUR CHILDREN WITH ETERNAL DEBT!!
