A Third World War by Newt Gingrich
Human Events Online ^ | July 17, 2006 | Newt Gingrich

Posted on 07/17/2006 10:36:46 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Like you, I spent the past week viewing the events in the Middle East with growing concern. In the 13 weeks that I have been bringing you my thoughts in Winning the Future, I have shared with you directly many challenges facing us. But no challenge confronting America is greater than the one I am writing about today. And no challenge requires us to be more candid and more direct about what victory will require.

As I talked about yesterday on NBC's "Meet the Press," I am now firmly convinced that the world confronts a situation that is frighteningly similar to a Third World War, one every bit as serious and dangerous as the two great conflicts of the 20th Century.

The recent attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah against Israel -- with the active political, financial and military support of Iran and Syria -- are just the latest acts in this war. It is a war that pits civilization and the rule of law against the dictatorships of Iran and Syria and the terrorist groups of Hezbollah and Hamas that they support. It is also a war that pits civilized nations against Islamic terrorist groups around the world, including, most significantly (but not exclusively), the al Qaeda network.

In the United States, we refer to this struggle as the "Global War on Terror". Yet, I believe this label fails to capture the nature and scale of the threat faced by civilization.

The nature of the threat -- with Iran at the epicenter -- is at its core ideological. The threat to the United States is an ideological wing of Islam that is irreconcilable to modern civilization as we know it throughout most of the world.

So much of what we've seen in the past 10 years strikes me as "testing"--seeing what we will do if we are pushed, or allies are pushed.

It's nice to see, with today's G8 endorsment of Bush's position, and Rice's comments, that we've got the right person in charge, someone who realizes this isn't an invented war like the dems seem to believe.

We play games with our votes in November at our peril.

Fortunately, this world war is against a bunch of pantywaist goat lovers, not the 3rd Reich or Imperial Japan.

What has happened in the past week is not WW III. We may eventually have a WW III, but it will likely be awhile.

It is obvious to point at Jewish/Muslim relations and say that is Armageddon waiting to happen. However, our knowledge of Armageddon has allowed for that for 2000+ years.

Iraq and Afghanistan are the first two to be turned. Others will follow. Extremists will be put down in time, but have been allowed free reign since President Carter. It will take time to put them down.

The recent events are only WW III if you consider the remilatirazation of the Rhineland or other prewar events as a direct part of WW II. I believe that what is happening now is setting the stage for a more global undertaking, but "our side" still has not awakened to the fact that we are at war. Oh, there are a few exceptions. But few understand why Israel is hitting back in Lebanon and few can see what happened in the former Yugoslavia where the Moslems won the war they began centuries ago - with the active help of Clinton and NATO.

How would Free Republic have reacted to the rise of Germany, Italy, and Japan before the Second World War if that had been possible? Would we have buried our heads in the sand as most of what later made up the Allies did? Would we have tried to bring attention to the issues? These are interesting philosophical questions, but they will not save a single soul from Islamic terrorism.

As General Dayan oncee noted when receiving one of his numerous medals, ''It's helpful if one can arrange to fight Arabs.''

There will probably never, ever be a world war as we knew it again. Public sentiment is too divided, and military equiptment is too expensive.

The 3rd Reich or Imperial Japan did not posses nuclear weapons, but certainly would have used them if they did. The question is do we wait for them to attack us in order to be politically correct? To try and please a world that would rather see us disappear, or do we take direct action to protect our way of life and the world itself from the disease called Islam.

Utterly absurd nonsense. Man who fed Gingrich the stupid pill?

Newt really needs to reign his instinct to be a media whore. He is a professional Historian for god sake. This is the stupidest nonsense for any Historian to be uttering. This sort of Chicken Little Bombast really, really, really undercuts the intellectually and political credibility of the various Conservatives who are saying it. When this all settles out in a month or so with no where near any of the doom and glooms hysteric predictions being any where near accurate, these Conservatives are going to take a massive PR hit.

This is NOT WW3 or WW 4 or the Apocalypse or whatever. OK everyone? This is vermin control or international gang warfare. Nazi German could conquerer whole countries and threatened the very structure of the International Political system. Even combining all the various nation state thugs involved here all of them come together come NO WHERE near Nazi Germany's weight on the international scene militarily, politically or economically.

Then there is the Military disparity between the US and all the various terrorist states groups. If push comes to shove we can annihilate their whole society in a very brief span of time. The best they can hope for is a signal sucker punch. They could kill some of our people but NOT threaten our national survival. In exchange, we would completely exterminate their entire political elites.

This sort of "World War 3" talk comes across and hysteric and bombastic. Conservatives should stop it. They make themselves look utterly foolish and chicken little hysteric using it.

Many similar remarks were made after WWI and before WWII. They were never uttered by the Germans, though.

Similarly, I am not hering these kinds of remarks from the Arab world...quite the contrary. There are many threats to cause another holocaust.

I think the prospect of a third WW is all to close and feasible.

Newt may be our best chance against militant Islam in '08, but many FReepers say they won't vote for him because he is divorced.

Go figure...

I would show a little more respect towards these monsters if I were you. We need to be concerned about the possibility of WMDs (many of which did not exist during WW II) and also modern communications and travel et al. It would only take one nuclear warhead or potent chemical attack, to inflict incalculable loss of life and damage to property. To be frank, the Islamists scare the bejesus out of me. I want to see them crushed WHEREVER they hide.

I have ZERO respect for these goat-*****s. We are crushing them. Heck, even Canada has stepped up to the plate. Like the President said, Iraq is just one battle in the WOT. It's going to be long, but we will win it, and transform islam and the ME in the process. It has already begun.

I am not talking about "repecting" the creeps. I am talking about respecting the potentials that can happen if these creeps get their hands on WMDs.

I have only loathing for the scum that they are, but no matter how much I may hate the guy who is pointing the gun at me, I WILL RESPECT THE GUN HE IS HOLDING!

Saudi Arabia, with Jordan, Egypt and several Persian Gulf states, chastised Hezbollah for “unexpected, inappropriate and irresponsible acts” at an emergency Arab League summit meeting in Cairo on Saturday. The Saudi foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, said of Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel, “These acts will pull the whole region back to years ago, and we cannot simply accept them.”

Not to mention that Hezbollah and Hamas are much too small to start a world war without the support the above-mentioned nations. A civil war within the Arab region is brewing, however, as a growing number of Arab leaders and citizens are getting seriously concerned about the organized effort to turn the region into a medieval theocracy.

I read a Macleans piece on Prince Alwaleed today. In his efforts to promote modernization of his backward society, and to diplomatically comply in the meantime with its backward laws like the prohibition on women driving, he has hired a female pilot for his personal plane. He has also said publicly that he is "in full support of Saudi ladies working in all fields". He (backed by his $24 billion, some of which may actually belong to other wealthy Saudis) is obviously not on board with the jihad program. http://www.macleans.ca/topstories/business/article.jsp?content=20060724_130673_130673
