Israel's partnership with the U.S. resulted in, among other things, the Arrow-2 missile system. Even faster than the Patriot, IIRC. Not yet combat-tested (but real soon, I'd wager).
It's shortcoming is the small number of launch installations (well, that Israel has disclosed...)
Yeah, my understanding was that the Patriot was a SAM, actually I guess they all are, but one to take out aircraft, that turned out to be so good it could knock down a few missles, or at least SCUDs which weren't state-of-the-art even back then. So it was more of a jumping off point into the modern "anti-missile missle" than anything else.
