Gingrich says it's World War III
The Seattle Times ^ | July 17, 2006 | David Postman

Posted on 07/17/2006 4:45:59 AM PDT by PDR

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president. "We need to have the militancy that says 'We're not going to lose a city,' " Gingrich said. He talks about the need to recognize World War III as important for military strategy and political strategy. Gingrich said he is "very worried" about Republicans facing fall elections and says the party must have the "nerve" to nationalize the elections and make the 2006 campaigns about a liberal Democratic agenda rather than about President Bush's record. Gingrich says that as of now Republicans "are sailing into the wind" in congressional campaigns. He said that's in part because of the Iraq war, adding, "Iraq is hard and painful and we do not explain it very well." But some of it is due to Republicans' congressional agenda. He said House and Senate Republicans "forgot the core principle" of the party and embraced Congressional pork. "Some of the guys," he said, have come down with a case of "incumbentitis."

I like Newt. I've always liked Newt, even when I've been pissed as hell at him...

But this quote: ""We need to have the militancy that says 'We're not going to lose a city,' " "

No leader can make those kinds of promises and people running for President shouldn't try. If this is WW3 we may have great losses but we will make the other guys have more and we will erode their capacity to wage war.

Democrats believe we need a "tough and smart" strategy that makes 2006
a year of transition in Iraq and aggressively takes the fight to the terrorists.

Wow, they got my vote. [/s]

I don't think that means what you think... he is taking about fervor, commitment, dedication.... he's not talking about making a "promise"

Hmmm Re-reading, I believe you are right and my first take was wrong.

Gingrich said in the coming days he plans to speak out publicly, and to the Administration, about the need to recognize that America is in World War III.

I saw a clip of Newt on Meet the Press yesterday making this very point. He is correct, of course, and the President needs to communicate this point very clearly.

And regarding the elections of '06 and '08, the liberals need to be shamed out of office for their appeasement.

The more I have been hearing out of Newt lately the more inclined I am to vote for him in a presidential primary.

President Bush won't even identify the enemy as *islam*, let alone call for a declared WW3. Newt's going nowhere with this.

Great ending, though...

It seems like it would be easy to juxtaposition the bumpersticker phrase "Tough and Smart" with some of the more idiotic statements Democrats have made over the past 6 years. Rush compiles these statements monthly in his newsletter.

He is not saying we won't lose a city. He's saying we have to project the attitude, in word and deed, that we don't intend to lose a city.

Yep, PDR got me to re-read the OP and I agree I read it wrong the first time.

Newt is obviously planning a run for President. The issue may have legs for him then.

As much as I like Newt, he has a snowball's chance...

The GOPers need another Reagan, and I don't see one of him in the current crowd or on the near/mid/far horizon.

I would be in total agreement.
However, the libs will assassinate him politically. He has some moral baggage that makes him an easy target. Regrettably, I think he is not elect able.
Another thing to ask ourselves.. we like Newt (Well some of us) , but would he remain true to his outspoken and up front stance, or would he retreat into a more constrained method like W has in his public statements?
W thinks like a lot of us, but has been subdued by the relentless barrage of lib rhetoric and lies. The public lemmings have heard so many of these lies and they have heard it so consistently that they now believe most of it. W has not defended himself and is paying a heavy price for it.
will Newt fall prey to the same?
Having said all that, I would vote for him in a HEARTBEAT if I thought for a minute my vote wouldn't be a wash.

Murtha suggested we withdraw to Okinawa. Is that the Democrats "tough and smart" strategy"?
