BOSTON It will be at least "a couple of months" before problems in the entire Big Dig highway system are repaired and the roads reopened, Gov. Mitt Romney said on Sunday, the same day another ramp was closed to traffic because of what he called a "systemic failure."
The work in the tunnel closed Sunday, a quarter-mile-long ramp, is expected to last at least several days and comes nearly a week after the collapse that crushed a car carrying Milena Del Valle, 38.
The closure was ordered because of potential problems with 40 of the bolts that hold up the heavy ceiling panels, Romney said.
Testing on the bolts has shown that "what happened last week was not an anomaly but a sytemic failure," Romney said.
"It appears the problem is far more substantial," than at first thought, he said.
Since Del Valle's death July 10, motorists had been using the now-closed ramp as a detour around the accident scene.
The ramp, which connects Interstate 90 westbound to Interstate 93 north and south, had been previously identified by Romney's inspection teams as a potential trouble spot, said Jon Carlisle, a state Highway Department spokesman.
"We're putting additional connections between the roof and the ceiling panels," he said, adding that the specific number of repair spots was unclear. "We're still working on the engineering."
So, just like always. $15 billion just doesn't buy what it used to. For those across the country: who's paying for this?...got a mirror?
The Big Dig.......brought to you by 'The Culture of Corruption'.....ye$ that$ right....ju$t another example of gro$$ mi$management foi$ted on you by the incompetent Dem leader$hip choice$ $elected by you $mart liberal voter$.
What happened to the letters 's' ? Thought I would wa$te a few dollar $ign$ in honor of DimRat voter$.
Meanwhile the tunnels built years ago for a tiny fraction of the cost are doing fine...how long are these gonna last? 5 years? Too bad they tore down the elevated highway (an "eyesore")--didn't want that old freeway up during the Dem.
Convention. We could USE that road right about now!
"We're still working on the engineering."
Anyone else remember the overcrowded skywalks that collapsed at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, July 17, 1981? Over 100 people died that evening. And there was also the Sampoong Department store in Seoul, South Korea, June 29th, 1995, five stories collapsed in a matter of seconds.
Somebody needs to go to jail.
I am not in a position to say who that someone is BUT:
Either bad engineering or bad sloppy work or lousy inspections were done and somebody got rich and now somebody else is dead. This calls for some jail time.
You heard it here first. Most of the Big Dig will be condemned, leaving Boston with no highway system for decades. The financial fallout will be horrendous. Dozens will go to prison, hundreds will have civil judgements against them. Notice how Kennedy looks like an elepahnt trying to hide behind a flag pole? He's in this up to his chin, but won't be punished. He'll be allowed to simply die in office.
Only people going to jail are Romney and his staff, if even them. Remember, Democrats are never held accountable. Especially in Massachusetts.
The saddest part about it all is that "EVERYBODY KNEW IT."
I remember when my boss at the facility I worked in near the North End told us all in a meeting about what we could anticipate concerning this coming boondoggle. That was in 1983!
Your post was excellent.
Not soon enough!

"I told you."
--the late Jerry Williams, longtime Boston talk host (er,
actually said before he died....re: Big Dig. Also, "This
doesn't pass the sniff test."
>> Notice how Kennedy looks like an elepahnt trying to hide behind a flag pole
rename the Ted W. tunnel after Ted K....gross mismanagement, overspending, not safe...woman dies underwater, sound
familiar?
We should slap this sitcker over Kennedy, Kerry and entire Mass. congressional delegation and carry it through to the election.
The Democrats are quickly forgetting their "Culture of Corruption" mantra.
