Plymout selectman nabbed in major sex sting

By Maureen Boyle, Enterprise staff writer KINGSTON — In one of the largest stings targeting online predators in the area, 11 men — including a newly elected Plymouth selectman — were nabbed trying to meet what they thought was a 13-year-old girl.

Sean Dodgson, 45, of Plymouth, elected to the Plymouth board this year, was among the 11 men arrested Friday night and Saturday in “Operation Trenchcoat,” a two-month, undercover investigation involving state, local and federal authorities posing as children online. Dodgson, a West Point graduate, beat the incumbent this year by more than 100 votes. He owns a computer company.

Some of the men were arrested in the area of the now closed Bickford's restaurant in Kingston after making arrangements to meet the “girl,” one was arrested in Attleboro and others were arrested at their homes.

The men, ranging in age from 17 to 57, approached what they thought were 13 and 14 year old girls online and tried to lure them into a sexual encounter.

The online chats to the undercover agents were often graphic, detailing sexual acts that would be performed on the “child,” and continued for days, weeks and in some cases months.

The suspects were booked at the Kingston Police Department then taken to the regional lockup at the Plymouth County jail.

“It shows this is a huge problem,” Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said Saturday night.

Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph McDonald said the effort was an important step in protecting children. “I'm pleased with how this has turned out,” he said Saturday night.

The operation — dubbed “Operation Trenchcoat” — involved more than 50 law enforcement agents, including the state police, Plymouth County Sheriff's department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Marshfield, Kingston, Plymouth and Wareham police and other local authorities throughout the region.

“This was a huge operation,” Cruz said. “I am disturbed by the number arrested but I'm not surprised. It just goes to show how widely spread this is.”

The sting was overseen by state police in the district attorney's office with key work done online by investigators in the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department's High Tech Evidence Analysis Team, or HEAT, as well as by state police and federal customs agents.

McDonald said cooperation between agencies is key in online investigations.

“This works best when we all work together,” McDonald said. “Local, state, county and federal agents all coming together is what is important.

Cruz said the operation also involved troopers assigned to his office, as well as state police assigned to the computer forensic unit and uniformed troopers throughout the state.

The arrests are the latest in Plymouth County involving state Trooper Peter Cooke, assigned to Cruz' office, and members of the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department High-Tech Evidence Analysis Team, or HEAT.

The arrests bring to 28 the number of accused online predators arrested by HEAT and state police since October.

Gerald Puldosky, chief-of-staff at the sheriff's department, said some of the comments made by the online predators are shocking. “It is like a pornographic book,” Puldosky, a former prosecutor with 30 years experience, said. “What they're saying online to what they believe is a 13 year old girl is unbelievable.”

The Pilot House Restaurant, left, is next to where the New York Central No. 16 is grounded.

This picture is Sean Dodgson, taken July 4, 2006, Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he tried to act like a patriot.

Standing next to Dodgson, is Delahunt, the Mass Congresscritter who has failed to support one of his constituents who is being held in the Brig at Camp Pendleton, one of the Pendleton 8.

D-OHH!!

I'll bet that there's a lot of stings going on at that myspace.com site. The FBI must have many agents cruising around there.

but this IS breaking news, this just came out!

From the rulebook: "Not every story is breaking news. Breaking news should be news that affects most of us. There are some exceptions. If there is a hot current event happening, check breaking news."

Again - this is neither.

Delahunt was my congresscritter before I escaped the Massachusetts gulag. I met him socially once, and he seemed like a pretty good guy. Then his name popped up as a player in Hugo Chavez' scheme to ship cheap oil to the needt of southern MA.

He recently refused to get involved n helping the family of one of the accused Marines being held in Pendleton. He is up for re-election, too.

Occassionally I've heard from my (fairly conservative)Canadian relatives
that there's a lot of politicking on "age of consent" issues there.
Here's a link to an article from February...but I think there's been
some noise since then so I don't know the current status.

Don't be too sure about that. If he's a Massachussetts Democrat, he may wriggle his way out of it.

Dodgson, a West Point graduate, beat the incumbent this year by more

I hope somebody on the admissions committee at West Point (and the other
service academies) take note...and adjust their screening procedures as needed.

He owns a computer company.
Give the guy an "A" for efficiency.
Neat way to subsidize his "habits" on the Internet.

Too bad Chris Hansen (sp?) and Dateline NBC weren't there to catch the
fellow on camera...doing one of those "stupid predator tricks" like
walking naked into the residence of the purported 13-year old.
