There's probably no way congressional Republicans can lose this fall, no matter how unpopular President Bush is or how unhappy the voters are with the war in Iraq. That's the prevailing view in Washington today.
But it's wrong.
If history is any guide, we're heading into a major political storm. And that means we could see a national tide in November that will sweep the Democrats back into the majority.
Virtually every public opinion measure points to a Category 4 or 5 hurricane gathering...
But many analysts have noted the absence of strategic behavior on the part of the Democrats, who have failed to recruit good candidates and have allowed the Republicans to maintain a fundraising advantage...
Over the past year, the Cook Political Report has increased the number of Republican seats it considers highly vulnerable from two to 10, and those it considers somewhat vulnerable from 16 to 25. Eighteen others are potentially vulnerable. That's a total of 53 GOP seats at risk, double the number of a year ago. During the same period, the number of competitive Democratic seats declined from 14 to 10;, while the total number of Democratic seats at risk remained at 21...

Only an ignorant sort believe that fuel prices are more or less directly manageable by politicians, maybe the dems could issue gasoline cards? A strict rationing, with the highly desirable "A" stickers available to those who vote the "correct" way, and hold "progressive" views. /s
I also wish the republican senate re-election committee would try and help out Kean Jr in NJ. he's a RINO, but Menendez is beatable in NJ - and that senate seat could be important.
Yes. And unfortunately their votes count just as much as ours.
You got it. I WAS a Libertarian for a while attempting to 'show them' but that isn't going to change the republican party. You need to change things from with in.
the Dems don't need any actual proposals, they benefit on any issue that the sheeple perceive as "going wrong", which tends to generate an anti-incumbent mood.
isn't a wave that silly thing that folks do at football games ???
This writer is an idiot. The president linked Iraq to the war on terror less than two weeks after 9-11, in a nationally televised speech. It has always been a part of the war on terror, and not for political reasons. The fact that this obviously Democrat writer thinks that the war on terror is a political game highlights why they will not be successful this fall and why morons like this writer STILL won't get it after being disappointed yet again.
Many of us may come home on election day but, for all you pols reading, maybe we won't! We've got people underfunding the campaigns, lying to the pollsters... I think we have a vested interest in making the demogogues look stronger than they are. We've got to hold these pubies' feet to the fire any way we can.
Elect more Dr. Tom Coburns to the Senate and we will see a change. When Senator Coburn first got to the Senate you could count 5-6 people behind his program to cut pork and now up to 14-15 and one person who has been behind Dr. Coburn consistently is Senate George Allen of Virginia. I saw the interaction of Coburn, Inhofe, and Allen at our OK Convention and saw first hand these guys are on the same page.
We need more good, honest conservative Republicans to make change in the House and Senate. That is a priority for the primaries for all of us to get out there and find these conservatives.
We have a huge primary for District 5 in Oklahoma to replace Ernest Istook. I don't live in the District but I am supporting Corp Commissioner Denise Bode who is running because she is the female version of Dr. Coburn. You won't back her down!
Can you imagine Jimmy Carter negotiating a deal with Ahmadinijad???
Barbara Boxer wants to send Madeleine Albright to negotiate a Middle East peace deal???
Like the rest of the Left, those jerks at the Washington Post are getting more and more dangerously deluded.
Mann is another MSM rat idiot.
Who's killing every attempt to increase our energy production?
Whatever this clown has been smoking has clearly killed the last brain cell in his mind. What a load of crapola. Whe you sample more democRATS than Republicans, is it any surprise that the polls favor democRATS, essentially by the same margin that democRATS are of the oversample.
The democRATS are going to go down in flames this fall it is actuallly going to be funny to see them...they're going to look like this:
There are many employed by the oil industry, (voters in the thousands) who relish these high prices. I am one of them.
High oil prices encourage Domestic Production. Domestic Production means JOBS!
well, some of them are people like Mel Martinez (gulf drilling) and the RINOs who will not vote for ANWR.
how many times have we heard the president complain about permits for new refinery construction? lots of times. well, kick some a** at EPA and clear out the beauracracy holding it up. Permanently dump the blended fuel mandates that gives us all these different blends. Clear the path for high mileage diesels to be sold in all 50 states, being held up now by restrictive NOx emissions rules.
The bottom line - we control the executive branch and both chambers, yet we can't make some of these changes in energy policies.
Sure, the American electorate are just clamoring for the party with no plans and no common sense? The party that cares only about their own power over the people and their money?
I, for one, don't think so.
and it also might mean a Democratic congress.
In the Thursday Trib/Dem "Reader's Forum" state chairman Gleason made the following statement among others.
Irey will represent us well in Congress. She supports our president and country in a time of need. She will work closely with Bush and Sens. Arlen Spector and Rick Santorum to bring government contracts to local businesses.
I'm sure Ms. Irey will be working with others to bring this message to the district.
Right! I tried not to be obvious before, but since you have mentioned it..The People have caught on to the Democrat Party.
They have learned that it is the Democrat who seeks to apply the socialists agenda, the communists manifesto, to the free people of the USA.
and I will also add - long ago there should have been reforms in the financial markets preventing hedge funds from speculating in oil - its a massive problem, and its adding $20 to each bbl right now.
