Serbian mercenaries at training before leaving to Iraq

Near to the Town of Obrenovac, at a secret polygon, about ten of former Serbian commandos are preparing themselves for a job in Iraq. The problems they are to deal with today are children's game comparing to what they shall have to go through in organization by the two most powerful world companies dealing with security in the areas of the world affected by the most serious crisis.

Agents of these two companies, one American and one British, have concluded a contract with one Serbian private company picking Serbia as a place from where they can get cheap but exceptionally trained labor.

The courses for training of people intending to go to Iraq last five days on average and usually begins on Sunday. There is everyday intensive training lasting six hours. The courses are usually organized for groups of eight to ten people.

'This is not a Rambo maniac game. This is a serious job for which you got to have absolutely clean past. Big and reputable companies that we are working for are not going to recruit anyone having criminal file', one of the trainers claims for our newspaper.

It is almost impossible to find out the number of people from Serbia working on security tasks in Iraq, but some estimate that there are about a thousand of them.

SCG Embassy in Baghdad does not have such data.

'Mere being in Baghdad is dangerous. About a thousand of people are killed each month in this town. You can only imagine how dangerous it is when you are in open, in naphtha fields or securing a convoy', Nino Maljevic, SCG Ambassador in Baghdad says.

'For me the most important thing is that people understand that we are not paid killers, maniacs or rapists as some media represents us', one of the men attending training said.

Well, its good to see that we've been reduced to hiring foreign mercenaries for our security needs. It was only a matter of time.

It's preferable over a draft.

Besides, the professional army led by Saddam is destroyed. All that's left are some die-hard terrorists.

The analogy that we could use today is Iraq is that it is similiar to our "Old West" in American history.

What a disaster Clinton and Albright were. We should have never attacked the Serbs. The consequences are even more disastrous than people believe. Prior to Clinton getting caught with his pants down, the Russian people were moving steadily towards democracy and the West. But Clinton's unwarranted attack on Russia's Serbian cousins stopped the Westward drift dead in its tracks and turned many average Russians against us. Sadly, we are only beginning to feel the terrible consequences of this.

We haven't been reduced to anything. We're not hiring these people. These are subcontractors hired to provide security for contractors, i.e. the people building roads, bridges, an electrical grid etc. Cities and corporations in in North America hire security services too. What's the difference? Is every rent-a-cop or private detective a mercenary?

Excellent. Few people have as much training in fighting Muzzies as the Serbs do. Time to settle some OLD scores....

These 'security contractors' do patrol and do other 'militray-like' operations. I don't know whether this is good or bad!

The historian in me says this is 'bad' !
I am reminded of the Byzantines (However I don't think we are quite as crafty! And as the Byzantines found out craftiness only goes so far!) So the long term US cultural consequences of these 'security contractors' worries me!

how wrong can you get, reily. I work with these people that are hired as security contractors. They run escorts for HVT/high value targets and do not conduct foot patrols of any kind. They only do convoy escorts and physical escort of their packages, i.e ground security for the AO their package is going to/in.

It shouldn't. The conduct of war is changing rapidly.

A good resource would be Van Creveld's _Transformation of War_. Another resource would be this article: http://www.d-n-i.net/fcs/4th_gen_war_gazette.htm

The short of it is this: When your enemy deploys troops in the field, armed, in uniform, under a flag, then you do the same. But when you confront non-state, civil society actors, you defend yourself in non-state, civil society sorts of ways. Otherwise you get into a mess like Israel is in at the moment, or a mess like we continue to be in in Iraq, a mess where you have to expend far more blood and treasure than your car-bombing, suicide vest-wearing enemies, and for ever diminishing returns.

There should be more security subcontractors in Iraq, not fewer. And if they behave like paramilitaries, so be it.

I love how all you uninformed idiots want to fantasize what these Aegis, BW etc contractors do. You all think they do the Rambo stuff because that is what you grandalize (is that a word?..:))

Reality, look at what I posted to reily.
