WASHINGTON - Liberal activists, including some California Democrats, are furious with Sen. Barbara Boxer -- a leading critic of the Iraq war -- for her active support of Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Democrat who staunchly defends the war in Iraq.
Lieberman is fighting for his political life in Connecticut, facing an anti-war opponent, cable magnate Ned Lamont, in an Aug. 8 Senate primary. Lieberman, his party's nominee for vice president in 2000, has already announced he will run as an independent in the fall if he loses the primary.
That decision has divided his Senate colleagues and Democrats nationwide. And the Lieberman race has ignited a fiery debate among Democrats, now raging on political blogs, about loyalty, political principles and whether the three-term senator has betrayed his party and should be tossed out.
Boxer, a California Democrat, said she decided to support Lieberman, and campaign for him in Connecticut, even though ``we have no common ground surrounding the issue of the Iraq war.''
Lieberman has been one of her ``staunchest allies'' on the environment and reproductive rights, two issues very important to her, Boxer said in a statement. ``I will be campaigning with him to let the voters know about his record on those issues.''
Several other Senate Democrats said they would campaign for Lieberman, but Boxer ``is among the most liberal members of the Senate, and her decision surprised some people,'' said Norman Ornstein, a longtime analyst of Congress and elections.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, also a California Democrat, is backing Lieberman, but has no plans to campaign for him. Boxer's decision stunned some California Democrats. Arianna Huffington, on her popular blog, titled one post ``What the hell is Barbara Boxer thinking?''

Talk about an oxymoron. LOL
"What the hell is Barbara Boxer thinking?"
Except for the far, Liberman's voting record is the envy of Boxer! He is her alter ego on socialist issues, that is how far left he really is.
So the democrat anti-war, hate Bush crowd is willing to sacrifice the MALE Barbara Boxer for his war position.
Lots of room in that tent!
You took the words right out of my fingers, Lee. Barbara Boxer's thinking is about as coherent as...well, I can't think of anything incoherent enough to compare to her thinking.
This is the woman who thinks Madeleine Albright would be an effective mediator for Middle East peace.
My guess is that we are going to see more and more of individual Democrats falling out as the party falls apart.
Of course Boxer is supporting Joe Liberalman, as he is just as big a liberal as she is, except on the war.
SCHADENFREUDE.
Good. Maybe we can get rid of her in the next election cycle.
Now, if only Feinstein do something equally annoying to her base before the November elections, I'd be one happy Californian.
Big Deal...all this Joe Lieberman hoopla is but a tempest in a teapot. Nice decent guy Joe is that but a Lib squish nonetheless. Kudos for his support though for the WOT.
This is great the Connecticut Dim vote will be divided and a Republican will have a chance of winning.
All the Connecticut Freepers need to get out and vote for Ned Lamont in the primary so that Lieberman runs as an independent.
They'll get over it.
Boxer is likely thinking: Well, if I sit on the sidelines and Lamont wins and we get into a three way race, we could lose a seat in the Senate in one of the Bluest of the Blue states to the Republicans--and that hurts ME!
"This is great the Connecticut Dim vote will be divided and a Republican will have a chance of winning."
Who is the likely Republican candidate? Does he have a reasonable shot at winning?
Well the primary hasn't been run yet so it seems so there isn't officially a Republican candidate.
But I don't really know, I am not from Connecticut.
Maybe LdSentinal knows.
But who ever it may be they will have a much better chance of winning if two Dims are running against each other as well as the Republican.
Of the two socialist CA Senators, Feinstein is more smarter.
Arthur Schlessinger is running for the Republicans and is a nominal candidate. With the chance that Lieberman might lose the primary, the Connecticut GOP is trying to force him out of the race and get a better candidate, but, so far, he has refused.

The GOP has already had their Primary?
