Syria's government on Sunday promised Israel a firm and immediate retaliation for any possible Israeli attack on its territory.
"Any aggression against Syria will be met with a firm and direct response whose timing and methods are unlimited," Syria's official news agency quoted Information Minister Mohsen Bilal as saying.
Responding to a report in a pan-Arab daily newspaper that Israel presented Damascus with an ultimatum, an Israel Defense Forces officer said Saturday that targeting Syria is currently not on Israel's agenda.
"We're not a gang that shoots in every direction," the officer said. "It won't be right to bring Syria into the campaign."
The London-based Al-Hayat newspaper reported Saturday that Israel issued an ultimatum to Syrian President Bashar Assad, according to which a regional war would erupt within 72 hours if Damascus does not prevent Hezbollah attacks.

anyone know what the prevailing winds are over there?
bttt
There will be a war with Syria and Iran as part of the 'War on Terrorism'. The sooner it happens, the better our the chances for those countries who support freedom. Now seems as good a time as any to dispatch, Hezbolah, the Mullah's in Iran, and the Assad Government. Are we serious about freedom and liberty or aren't we?
I bet he had his finger crossed when saying that!
Syria is overdue.
Also, the sooner we, or anyone else acts against Iran and Syria, the better. Iran is perilously close to being capable of delivering a nuclear weapon to the area. I'd like to see Israel hit areas in and around the Bekkah Valley to eliminate any potential transportation of Saddam's suspected hidden WMDs. Better to engage these foes now, before they can wield nukes.
Long ago Folks I still view as Friends are Syrian or Lebanese. Some a confusing dual passport.
Still, the "sooner than later" option is first choice.
Get it did and move on to some future and not some continued "red rash".
Agreed. If Israel goes after Syria, I wonder if any of the original Iraqi "weapons of mass destruction" will be found there.....
It's essentially the same front. Many of the Iraqi attacks are being orchestrated with Iranian help, anyway. We already have troops and equipment on both sides of Iran. Supplementing those forces would squeeze Iran and place Syria in a vice between us and Israel. This would be a good opportunity to finish something that has been long overdue.
This will be one hell of a way to find out. If this turns out to be true, I will never understand why this angle wasn't persued more heavily at the time. Right around the 2004 election, the rumors about unguarded weapons caches in Iraq being raided was circulated in the MSM. Bill Gertz came out with the story where John Shaw had information the Russians helped move Saddam's WMDs to Syria.
Both stories quickly disappeared for some reason. I am not sure if that was due to falsehood or national security. If the WMDs are there, I hope they're destroyed or surrendered before they can be used. We certainly don't need mass U.S. or Israeli casualties just to be able to say, "I told you so."

UNDOF was established in 1974 following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights. UNDOF continues to supervise the implementation of the agreement and maintain ceasefire.
It's getting hard to imagine this not leading to a nuclear detonation at some point. The thing is.....IMO, if Israel nuked Teheran, there wouldn't be any fight left from Syria at all. Scary to think in those terms.
Per Greg Tobin of Fox News, the rocket which killed 9 people this morning has been determined to be SYRIAN MADE.
I can't imagine Israel going nuclear unless they were massively provoked. Any use or imminent threat of WMDs by Hezbollah, Hamas, Syria, or Iran would mean all bets are off.
I saw that report. Apparently, the warhead contained ball bearings (a flying claymore, i guess), which is supposedly unique to Syrian weaponry.
Say, WHAT?
