I read a source earlier today saying two were transfered to Iran. Who knows but I'm not feeling hopefull for them, especially the one kidnapped by Hamas.

That's essentially what I heard from my loved ones also stuck in (South) Lebanon about what "stay put" and not safe to evacuate right now...that it was more a "don't everyone rush to the embassy thinking we're putting you all on the two choppers and taking you all at once" type thing.

That apparently, from what they were hearing talking to the embassy from where they are holed up, that when word got out that American forces were on the ground to begin evacuations, that the embassy was being inundated and that THAT wasn't safe (people congregated, out in the open, nowhere to get for cover quickly, and night coming quickly, etc.) and all those people need to "stay put" until the advance team has everything set and THEN they are STILL planning to evacuate the Americans (that want to/can be reached/etc.)

I think you are correct. This is an emergency strategy - set in play by Iran. However, if Israel hadn't allowed Hezbollah move into the border area during the last 6 years, they wouldn't have had the possibilty to launch such a strong offensive. Barak, Peres, Sharon, Olmert are all guilty of that oversight.

Has anyone else noticed that the women reporting from Israel have been very composed and professional? Good. Just keep that in mind for when Geraldo and Shep get in front of the cameras. I hope someone has a fainting couch handy for them. Add a kidnapped blond teenager to the mix and send Greta for the faux FOX trifecta.

I try to watch FOX most of the time because I can't stand CNN but honestly sometimes I really think they're aiming for the National Enquirer demographic. Geraldo/Shep/Greta - the Jerry Springers of "hard news".

"The Iwo Jima group is the closest assets in the area, not sure what else there is in the 6th fleet inventory.

The battle group was training in the Med up until a few weeks ago, and were transiting the Red Sea last I heard.

There is no carrier group in the Med. There were three off NK during those launches, but now there are two in that general area, one in Indonesia, 2 in So Cal, one in the Atlantic, and one in the Persian Gulf. I think one carrier is in dry dock also."

Thanks for the update BurbankKarl!

Rather amazing how few naval assets we actually have in the Mideast. The North Korea situation may have misdirected us from a perennial hotpot which just flared up big time.

Still, any American who goes to Lebanon should understand the risks involved.

Israel acknowledges it's facing no "rag-tag" army

By Luke Baker JERUSALEM, July 16 (Reuters) - Five days of fighting have given Israel pause to reevaluate the strength of one of its most hardened enemies -- Hizbollah.

Since Wednesday, the Lebanese guerrilla group has killed 12 Israeli troops, captured two others, rained missiles down on northern Israel, killing at least 12 civilians, and badly damaged a navy ship, sending it back to port.

Hizbollah's leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has appeared on television threatening all-out war and pledging to target major Israeli infrastructure such as petrochemicals plants.

Just as Lebanon's economy has been shattered by Israel's aerial bombardment and coastal siege in recent days, Israel's stock market has been hit by one of the worst Middle East crises in decades, falling 11 percent in three sessions.

"The idea that Hizbollah is some sort of rag-tag militia with AK-47s and a few RPGs is simply ridiculous," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said on Sunday.

"What we saw this morning in Haifa demonstrates that it is a formidable military organisation," he said, speaking shortly after Hizbollah hit Israel's third-largest city with 20 missiles, killing eight people and wounding dozens.

Israel has made very clear that it wants to use its offensive to remove the threat of a well-armed Hizbollah from its border, as well as to recover its abducted soldiers.

A heightened state of alert has now been imposed across northern Israel, including the commercial capital Tel Aviv, as authorities realise the range of Hizbollah's vast rocket arsenal may be much further than previously thought.

Thousands of residents have begun fleeing northern Israel and those who are staying behind are sleeping in bomb shelters.

For Hizbollah, a Shi'ite Muslim group originally founded to oppose Israel's invasion of Lebanon 24 years ago, it marks a very hot return to the world stage after several years of relative quiet in its battle with Israel.
