New Orleans evacuee charged in Mobile in baby beating

MOBILE, Ala. A Katrina evacuee from New Orleans is charged in Mobile with attempted murder in the beating of her baby daughter described by authorities as brain-dead.

Christy Ross relocated to Mobile after Hurricane Katrina struck in August.

In court yesterday, the 31-year-old woman appeared emotionless before Mobile County District Judge Michael McMaken, who denied her bail.

The child, 13-month-old Tawanda Dune, remains on life support in a Mobile hospital -- injuries include a broken leg and blows to her forehead and the back of her head.

The prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Ashley Rich, says the child is on life support, and there was no brain activity when they performed a brain scan.

Rich says Ross, a mother of eight, is pregnant.

Arrested Thursday, police said she brought the injured child -- who is a twin -- to a hospital, stating that her injuries were caused by a seizure.

Meanwhile, in other news:

Thousands of Katrina refugees have found jobs in new cities and are rebuilding their lives.

Thousands of Katrina refugees hugged their children today.

Hundreds of long-time local residents abused their children all across America this week.

While it is of some interest that a Katrina refugee did something bad, the vast majority of them are doing their best to recover from a disaster.

Christy Ross' momma should have aborted HER 31 years ago. Maybe the State will do it now.

Beats her baby to death and is expecting again - simply mahvalous!

And dollars to donuts her freaking attorney will likely blame FEMA and Bush. Somehow, someway it'll be their fault that this 'Katrina Evacuee' is low life pond scum and they created 'stress' and that made her do it.

IMO people like this need to be sterilized at puberty.

Sorry, the Andrea Yates Centre for Understanding Post Partum Depression says that society failed to come to this woman's aid, and must bear partial responsibility for the baby being beaten on the forehead and the back of the head, and it's leg broken. A charge of murder would only further victimize the poor mother.

I don't know how you know that the "vast majority" of these folks are contributing in a positive way to their new communities, but I wish we here in the Houston area had gotten those Katrina evacuees instead of the ones who have brought ever more crime and violence to us.

Mobile's courts will deal swiftly and justly with this sorry-excuse-for-a-mama. You ought to see how tough we are on dog abusers. This woman...well, her life is about to get a lot shorter.

Count up all the crimes committed by Katrina evacuees in the Houston area, then compare that to the number of Katrina evacuees in the Houston area.

Do that, then get back to me.

"No.

It's not my battle. I know that most of the Katrina evacuees are not criminals. They are displaced due to a hurricane. We have a bunch of them here in Minnesota, too. A few have committed crimes. Almost all have not.

I know what the statistics will show. I have no need to go and get the details in Houston. I don't live there. I know the stats here where I live.

You may be afraid of really finding out about the people who were displaced by a natural disaster. I am not. Yes, some percentage of them are criminals. Some native residents of Houston are criminals. There are criminals everywhere.

But, it doesn't really matter to me. You live in the Houston area? Go check it out.

Birth control?

Why use birth control when dropping a baby each year results in a bigger check, compliments of the big Sugar Daddy in Washington D.C.?
