Assem Hammoud, 31, the architect of a plan to bomb New York tunnels, was trained and directed by Al Qaida to strike by the end of this year, U.S. and Lebanese officials said.

"Security forces were able to track e-mails and conversations on an extremist Islamic website used to recruit terrorists," the Lebanese Internal Security Forces said in a statement.

Hammoud, nicknamed the "Andalusian prince" in an apparent reference to Islamic emirs who once ruled Spain, was trained in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein Hilwe near Sidon, the ISF statement said. Ein Hilwe has long been a hotbed of terrorist activity.

The statement said Hammoud was a Syrian national and that he had intended to travel to Pakistan for additional training.

I've still never figured out why we keep sending money to these clowns, and why we keep insisting they get their own country carved out of Israel. I suspect that oil money greases quite a few politicians and newspapers (NYT).

Yes, I agree. I think the Kurds are more deserving of statehood than the malcontents in gaza and most of west bank. Bolton should push the UN to stop funding these breeding grounds for terrorism, the paleo refugee camps. Let their Arab brothers show some compassion and give these people citizenship rights. Close all the camps, post haste.

I won't be shocked to find out that this Palestinian refugee camp

From the article:
Hammoud, a lecturer at Lebanese International University, was arrested on April 27 and accused of plotting the attacks in the United States. He reportedly has admitted forming a cell to conduct a series of major strikes.

Oh, DUH, it was in the article? I learned to skim-read studying English Lit and it can certainly do one in. When it comes to details.

It wasn't you--it wasn't in the excerpt. I added it to answer your question.

Well, thanks for adding it. I was so curious.... I'm glad to hear it wasn't there. But I am a BAD skimmer.
