Patient wearing oxygen mask sparks fire

DALLAS - A patient who was wearing an oxygen mask tried to light a cigarette in his hospital room, sparking a fire that forced the evacuation of more than 100 patients, destroyed the room and melted medical equipment, officials said.

A nurse at Methodist Dallas Medical Center rescued the man from his burning bed shortly after the Thursday night blaze started. He suffered serious burns and was taken to the burn unit another Dallas hospital, but no one else was hurt, hospital officials said.

"He somehow got the strength to smoke a cigarette with a nonremovable mask," Dallas Fire-Rescue Capt. Paul Martinez said. "I don't know how he did it, but he did it."

Hospital sprinklers kept the blaze mostly in one room, said fire Lt. Joel Lavender.

Officials didn't release the man's name or condition Friday, citing medical privacy laws

An addiction so powerful that even self preservation is secondary to the "fix".

I have seen this IN PERSON more than once. SWOOOSh . Eyebrows, eye lashed and hair boarding face instantly gone. The guy's skin had very little actual damage except where the nasal cannula tubing melted into his cheeks.

But it must be okay. Rush and a lot of Freepers
defend their right to hurt themselves by doing it.

This happens more than you would think.
About three times a year there is a new item about somebody smoking while on O2.
Then there was the time some guy blew up his house while doing this.

Or a person so stupid as to not realize that oxygen and fire don't mix.

Any big difference you see?

Bangs, a short beard, neck hair and even some chest hair. Singed his cotton shirt collar too.

He actually had two nasal cannulas stuck in his nose connected to Lindy Walkers turned up to their max O2 output.

Give it another twenty years and we'll start getting reports of aging hippies with oxygen masks trying to light a roach.

It isn't so much that ... it's just that they're beginning to promote smoking as a positive good, simply because it's under attack by the left.

Yes ... the fact that no one is trying to pretend that rock climbing doesn't carry a significant risk.

I'm gonna quit when I have to wear a non-removable oxygen mask.

I haven't heard very many people saying that smoking doesn't carry a significant risk.

No w if we're talking about ETS, that's a different story.
How many people not rock climbers are killed by rock climbers, or rocks dislodged by rock climbers, falling ON them?

Yeah. I don't go rock climbing, for one thing.
And I'm not stupid enough to put a demonstrated
poison and carcinogen voluntarily into my system,
for another.

I take it you do.
