PROVINCETOWN -- Town leaders here are holding a public meeting today to air concerns about slurs and bigoted behavior. And this time, they say, it's gay people who are displaying intolerance.
Police say they logged numerous complaints of straight people being called "breeders" by gays over the July Fourth holiday weekend. Jamaican workers reported being the target of racial slurs. And a woman was verbally accosted after signing a petition that opposed same-sex marriage, they said.
The town, which prizes its reputation for openness and tolerance, is taking the concerns seriously, though police say they do not consider the incidents hate crimes.
"Hate language is usually the early-warning signal that could lead to hate-motivated violence," Town Manager Keith Bergman said. "And before that happens, we try to nip it in the bud."
Gays have coexisted fairly peacefully alongside other residents in this community on Cape Cod's tip, home to a long-established Portuguese fishing colony.
Provincetown was recently re-certified for its "No Place for Hate" designation by the AntiDefamation League, which worked with the town on tolerance issues in the 1990s after gays experienced some problems. But the town's "No Place for Hate" group, set up to address incidents of bigotry, hasn't met in years.

The result of liberals elevating homosexuals above heterosexuals. Some now openly consider themselves superior to us straight people.
whacko is as whacko does.
Goes to show that almost everybody can be a racist and discriminatory.
This here's one proud breeder, and I really don't mind being called one by a person who's sexual activity ensures his or her lack of a lineage.
Bump
If it weren't for breeders, where would the gays come from in the first place?
I live on the Cape, and people from P-town are f**kin weirdos...
best response.....
So's your mother!!!
Yeah, you gotta keep 'em in their place.
And that place would be as equals under the law.
There's their first mistake. "Openness" and "tolerance" are code words for "hatefulness" and "intolerance" if you're a liberal. The only folks who qualify for their largesse are perverts, criminals, and lunatics. If you're normal, you deserve to be treated like scum.
Tolerance is selective, you see.
Response: Now the town residents are learning the consequences of "tolerance" with regard to the long recognized sociopathic element living among them. Enjoy! As sodomite influence increases even greater "tolerance" will be required in the future. After all, since "tolerance" is so desirable ever more and more should be wanted.
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
Remember: it's only hate if it's a slur directed at a minority.
Now pay your taxes, millions of non paying illegals need the money.
I live in the Gay State, as well. Went to PTown twenty years ago with our Brit friends, ran into a bunch of Straight Hate, and never went back. Prior to the "In Your Face" militancy, We used to go there all the time.
But ignore the above, if you wish.
It's just a True Fairy Tale! Haw haw haw...
When I was a much younger man I worked with 2 guys who were gay. I was new in town so they used to take me (although I'm a breeder) around town, sometimes to gay bars. What I learned was this: Gays trash talk heterosexuals all the time. We may call them homos, pole smokers, rope lickers, etc... but believe me, they have their own lexicon just for us. This cuts both ways.
The only difference I see between what I saw 20 plus years ago and what is happening now is that left wing gays are one HELL of a lot mouthier than they used to be. That comes from living for 30 years in a consequence free environment where having a fatal veneral disease is 'heroic'.
Turkey basters???
