The cross-border raid by Hezbollah gunmen on an Israeli army patrol in northern Israel and the abduction of two soldiers whom the captors declared to be bargaining chips for the release of Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners held by Israel prompted a response that threatens the stability of the region.
"The notion that this is a limited operation is wrong -- this is a fundamentally new situation," Gen. Gershon Yitzhak, head of the Israeli Army Home Front Command, said in an interview. "This is not an operation. This is a war for the sake of our home, what it will look like in the future and how we will be able to live in the region. This operation will continue to expand, and it is only just beginning.
"We must remove this threat once and for all," the general added.
In the six years since the Israeli army withdrew from southern Lebanon, ending 18 years of occupation, the government in Jerusalem has responded to similar kidnappings and kidnap attempts with minor displays of force and the occasional limited bombing of targets in Lebanon and Syria.

Lets take your analogy a little further.
Say MS-13 had hundreds of rockets that it fired from Brownsville to strike border towns inside Mexico on a regular basis.
Say also that MS-13 crossed the border to kidnap and murder Mexican border agents (such as they are) to use as bargaining chips hoping to secure the release of their jailed members.
Say also that MS-13 regularly tried to send people into Mexico with the sole express purpose of blowing up restuarants, discos, and pizza parlors.
If all of those things were happening wouldn't the Mexican governement have the right to demand the US government do something? And if the US governement chose not to, wouldn't the Mexican government eventually, after years and years of trying to convince the US, be justified in attacking?
I think they would, I think that analogy is what the UN should consider and I think Israel is 100% in the right.
Isn't today the Jewish Sabbath? Traditionally they hold back when they can safely on the Sabbath. Though the next day tends to be all the more fierce.
Israel is hitting back because they have a million citizens in bomb shelters and need to remove the threat.
Sometimes there are no neat, easy solutions. This is about survival.
Yes, we know these military groups are located in civilian areas.
Like any country with active enemies, they have contingency plans.
And they are now acting on it.
A civilian is not Hezbollah.
Israel's response is totally disproportionate.
Israel with a population of only six million should respond proportionally to the one billion muslims aligned against them, they should be killing at least 150 muslim civilians for every Israeli civilian who has been killed. And since muslims are having three times as many children as the Israelis, they should be killing at least 450 muslim children for every Israeli child who has been killed.
The question isn't why Israel "hit back so hard", but why she waited so long to do so. This defensive action is long overdue.
Can't advocate targeting civilians.
Because for Israel it is a war for survival, for their very existence, and they know it.
The Muslim world groups Israel and the US in the same category, zionist crusaders.
We also hit back hard, very hard, and it turned into political mush. The lefties, liberals and their lapdogs in the dim party and MSM see this as some kind of moral struggle of right and wrong where we and Israel are portrayed as being on the wrong side.
What is it going to take for us to realize, as a country, that this is a fight for our survival? An ocean doesn't protect us anymore. The UN is worthless and euroweenies are slithering all over themselves to appease.
Unlike previous wars we won't get a chance to reposture, rearm and prevail. The time is now and only now to plan to win. Any other choice will have us apologizing for generations to come for failing them.
You're right. This is nothing more than a hockey brawl compared to their true capability.
Not unless it's already past sundown there.
Not only are the mooslim cowards fighting behind women and children, but they view all Israelis (men, women and children) as potential combatants (using the excuse of compulsory and reserve military service), and they have shown no mercy in attacking them in their terrorist attacks.
The mooselies have been at war with Israel and the rest of the infidels for decades - some will logically argue that this war has lasted centuries. Civilians get caught in the crossfire, especially when they are being used by combatants as human shields.
War is hell. We do our best, like no other country has ever done in all of human history, to minumize the number of civilian casualties. However, civilans in war zones are still going to be at risk. What the muzzies do with their civilians is criminal. When you hear of arab civilian casualties, it is the fault of the mooselims intentional failure to evacuate them from the war zone.
Yes, it is. But remember what it took to end World War II -- that was far worse.
Carolyn
It's that same civilian society that harbors, condones, and actively supports the terrorists.
I think this was Israel's plan when they first gave up Gaza - get the friendly targets off the battlefield before the shooting starts.
Screw the "civilians". in this conflict there are no muslim "civilians".
As far as the "children" go, as Tom Quick, Avenger of the Delaware said, "from nits come lice".
