Bill Clinton will help stoke Senate kickoff after primary
NASHVILLE -- Harold Ford Jr. is planning a big general election U.S. Senate campaign rally here the day after the Aug. 3 primary -- with help from a high-powered guest.
Former president Bill Clinton is scheduled to spend Aug. 4 in Tennessee with Ford, helping to raise campaign money for him and the Democratic Party and -- tentatively -- ending with a rally at LP Field, the recently renamed home of the Tennessee Titans.
Ford's campaign said Thursday it has no announcement on the event yet and state Democratic Party spokesman Mark Brown said the event "is still in the planning stages."
But the Ford campaign's finance staff is spreading the word to Democratic donors across the state.
At this point, tickets to a planned luncheon for the Democratic Party's "coordinated campaign" -- work by the state party on behalf of all Democratic nominees -- are tentatively set for $10,000 per couple. A small pre-rally reception is $1,000 per person and a larger general reception is $150 per person. There is no word yet on whether there will be an admission fee to the stadium rally.
A Clinton visit is sure to energize the Democratic base but is equally certain to draw Republican fire to Ford, who represents Memphis in the U.S. House. Clinton carried Tennessee in his two presidential runs in 1992 and 1996. But his native-son vice president, Al Gore, lost his home state by 80,000 votes in 2000, which cost Gore the presidency.
Republican senatorial candidate Ed Bryant's current TV campaign ad carries a headline, purportedly from the Chattanooga newspaper, reading "Clinton's Multiplied Lies," while a voiceover says "Too many politicians sell out their values, lie about what they've done."
All three GOP Senate candidates have tried to link Ford to U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., because of her contributions to his campaign and because she is a lightning rod for conservatives.
The four major Senate candidates will be in East and Middle Tennessee today rallying their supporters to go to the polls on the first day of early voting in the primary. Ford and Republican Van Hilleary will be in Knoxville and nearby counties, Republican Bob Corker will be in Chattanooga and Bryant in Davidson and Williamson counties.
Early voting for the Aug. 3 primary and county general elections starts today and runs through July 29.

So far, Jr. has done nothing but attack "Big Oil", promise lower gasoline prices, and play the race card. That old crap has always worked for other members of his totally corrupt family, but aside from the ignorant masses in Western Tennessee, I see no groundswell of support for the lying little pr*ck.
Just one more ambitious, "I deserve to be elected because...well, because I WANT to be elected" hack. Probably explains Hillary's support; kindred spirits, don'tcha know?
OOOOO - I see an excellent FReep opportunity!
Ha! Sorry, I didn't mean to zing the innocent bystanders.
...lock up all the young girls and family pets
Doogle
No problem! I understand!
It's long past the time for Junior to be back at the family business selling overpriced caskets to his poor former constituents.
Too late for that!!
Yes Ford is doomed. If he were to add Shrum as a campaign manager, Ford may as well hang up his jock-strap.
"Yes Ford is doomed."
What Swifty Clinton can't do to finish off Jr., the support of Ford by the idiot, Don Imus, will accomplish.
Clinton coming to Tennessee to help a member of the Ford family? That is precious. What a gift to the Tennessee GOP.
Here is West Tennessee we have a candidate who is running for Congress because she remembers her grandmother waiting on the porch for her gubment checks for diabetes induced blindness and she does not want the government to forget that. That is her ad and seems to be her whole platform.
Be sure and get some pictures of the groupies that get in line for their mammograms!
It doesn't matter if Ford gets the Pope or the man in the moon to campaign for him, he won't win. He'll win Shelby County and maybe a few neighboring counties, but middle and east Tennesse will elect someone other than Junior. The Ford family may be hot stuff in west TN, especially Shelby county but the rest of the state doesn't give a flip about them.
Do you think then Jr will run for mayor? Some have said that.
Don't know. If this senate thing doesn't pan out, the mayor's job would be sloppy seconds. Jr couldn't be any worse than King Willie.
