The City Council approved a law Thursday night designed to make this small city in northeastern Pennsylvania among the most hostile places in the U.S. for illegal immigrants to live or work. The 4-to-1 vote came after nearly two hours of passionate debate. Opponents argued it was divisive and possibly illegal, but supporters argued illegal immigrants' growing numbers have damaged the quality of life here.
"We must draw the line, and we are doing it tonight," Mayor Lou Barletta told a packed council chambers.
Barletta proposed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act last month as a response to what he said were Hazleton's problems with violent crime, crowded schools, hospital costs and the demand for services.
The ordinance would deny licenses to businesses that employ illegal immigrants, fine landlords $1,000 for each illegal immigrant discovered renting their properties, and require city documents to be in English only.
The most frightening aspect is the large numbers of people who support illegality, redefining something as basic and simple as marriage and attempting to prosecute soldiers for following their training and protecting their country!
Zook wants to rent a two bedroom apartment to 15 illegals and charge each $150.00 a month.
It is a crying shame and even some of the so called conservatives around here don't even seem to get it!
Finally, city leaders with guts enough to say "enough is enough" to criminals.
Hmmm. So it's illegal to declare something that's illegal as illegal?
It is a crying shame and even some of the so called conservatives around here don't even seem to get it!
Ditto that. It's pathetic to what this country has sunken. I've suggested to both of my children not to have children. In 56 years, I don't recognize America as she was long ago when I was a child.

It's not unconstitutional. It's based on status and not national origin.
This will make the pro-illegals apoplectic.

Every time I hear that "divisive" routine, I'm reminded of Lyndon Johnson launching into his "come, let us reason together" routine. He always presented it as an appeal to calm dialog, and somehow never got around to mentioning that the second part of the quote is something to the effect of "I'll smite your a** if you don't agree with me".
The only cure for divisiveness is to force everyone to think alike. Which is, of course, an idea the left clings fondly to.
"That's the new curse of the Left: "It's DIVISIVE! You're being DIVISIVE! WAAAAAA!""
Same with the word "COMPROMISE" meaning "you conservatives should cave in and give us what we want."
Odd, isn't it, that the word "compromise" always comes up in more or less the same situations where the word 'truce' comes up with jihaddists?
Essentially, it means they've realized they're losing so they're offering to take only half of what that they're not entitled to instead of all of it.

Hmm. What would that tautologic law look like? "Those who are illegally in this country may not live or work here."
