At the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Bush traveled to northeastern Germany in advance of his participation in the G-8 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Chancellor Merkel hosted President Bush today in the towns of Stralsund and Trinwillershagen, which are in the Chancellor's electoral constituency. The visit, which took place in what had been communist East Germany, underscores our two nations' commitment to advancing freedom and prosperity, and to strengthening the transatlantic partnership.
The President and the Chancellor took part in a joint press conference in the Straslund Town Hall, and the President also spoke in the historic market square. The First Lady visited a Kinderbibliothek (Children's Library) and toured Straslund City Archives and Baroque library, and attended a luncheon.
The First Couple visited St. Nikolai Church and toured it with Pastor Peter Neumann, and later traveled to the village of Trinwillershagen on the German Baltic Sea for a wild pig barbecue.
In tumultuous times it is reassuring to have a President who stands firm on principle and in strength of conviction and courage. Enjoy your trip to Sanity Island on a MONSTER Dose!

The only bummer was that our camera batteries died right during the Purple Heart award, so we didn't get any of us shaking hands. It really was Soooooo exciting. We waited 3 hours, standing in a pretty toasty warm hangar, but it was sure worth it. I was so proud looking up at the stage and seeing all those strong and proud faces from ALL the branches of the American military. We always work so separately on this base, this was such a rare event.

It's very hot here and what little yard work I did (for about 15 minutes) just about knocked me out.

These photos of Laura are gorgeous--you are right. She is so lovely--inside and out. I am a bit surprised, though, that she wore that black suit today. It is very pretty--but black! No big deal, I was just a little surprised.

These photos of the band and GWB are just classic--his arm around the (I assume) real conductor, pretending to conduct and then over on the other side talking to the other musicians. Just love this man!

BUSH'S GRIM CHOICES

No president can anticipate all of the problems that will arise on his "watch," but surely even his worst enemies will admit that George W. Bush has been handed more than his fair share of exploding cigars.
To be sure, observers have long foreseen that a time would come when an alarming number of medium-sized nations would acquire the ability to construct nuclear weapons and the technology to inflict them on other countries. Hence the decades-long effort to impose restrictions on such efforts, notably through the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. But the treaty has been only marginally successful, and a series of presidents of both parties have watched a chain of ill-intentioned "rogue nations" move resolutely toward nuclear capability, and simply thanked their stars that the bad actors wouldn't reach it while they were in the White House.
As luck would have it, the chickens came home to roost during the administration of the junior Bush.
. . . To Bush's great credit, he hasn't crumpled before this ghastly mixture of grisly attacks and unspeakable dangers. On the contrary, he has confronted them stoutly, by a combination of diplomatic and military measures, and shows not the slightest sign of backing down. One may quarrel with his choice of targets or techniques -- the Democrats have been strikingly inventive in this regard, if a little short of alternative suggestions -- but George W. Bush, however history comes to regard him, is hardly likely to be criticized as a "do-nothing president."
When he steps down in January 2009, the burden of coping with these problems, whatever form they may by then have taken, will be assumed by his successor. If it is Hillary Clinton -- stoutly supported, no doubt, by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and perhaps even Senate majority leader Harry Reid -- the American people will swiftly learn how good the Democrats are at battling Kim Jong Il, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Osama bin Laden, or their successors.
Meanwhile, for two and a half more years, the shots will continue to be called by George W. Bush. May the Lord grant him a steady eye.

Absolutely! What a lot of work for you--though as I have said before I know it is a labor of love. Thank you so much. The one good thing about them being overseas is that we get lots of great photos. I would rather have them on our soil, though!
