Some Leeway for the Small Shoplifter
The New York Times ^ | 7/13/2006 | Michael Barbaro

Posted on 07/13/2006 5:44:24 AM PDT by Ptaz

Wal-Mart refuses to carry smutty magazines. It will not sell compact discs with obscene lyrics. And when it catches customers shoplifting — even a pair of socks or a pack of cigarettes — it prosecutes them.

Paul Sakuma/Associated Press Customers outside a Wal-Mart store in Mountain View, Calif. But now, in a rare display of limited permissiveness, Wal-Mart is letting thieves off the hook — at least in cases involving $25 or less.

Still, a single employee walking off with a $999 flatscreen TV is much more important to stop than 333 kids stealing a $3 pair of socks.

It takes similar resources to prosecute the thieves too, and that employee who can steal the good stuff can probably steal a whole truckload you know.

For the most part Wal-Mart's security system is sufficient to stop almost all petty theft anyway.

No doubt it is NYT editorial policy to encourage theft of all kinds. They are long overdue for some "frog marches".

I think it is important that we avoid as much as possible posting any articles from the New York Times. Everytime we visit their site we are contributing money to their paper. They get paid by their advertisers based upon the number of hits and everytime a freeper posts an article from the NY Times and provides the necessary link, the NY Times makes some money.

That being said, I think we need to exercise a little discretion in whether or not we really NEED to post some stupid story if the primary source is the NY Times. If you can find the story elsewhere then post it from there. But I will NOT post a story from there, neither will I follow a link to the NY Times. I will not support traitors and everytime we visit their site we are supporting them.

Think about it.

J. P. Suarez and WalMart have an obligation to the citizens who provide it's mega profits. They have a duty to uphold the law, to make sure that laws are followed and violators punished, and for the good of the public, make a strong statement that right is right and wrong is wrong.

If WalMart doesn't hold the line, then who will?

If they are thieves they should be held accountable. If you let them go they will migrate to being bigger and bigger criminals.

Somebody once said something about a camel's nose, and a tent. Now, let me see, what was that...

"My first reaction is: The NYT is announcing Wal-Mart's policy in order to promote petty theft from their stores."

You are correct. The anti-American terrorist supporters at the New York Times will do anything to bring down a business that does not conform to their anti-American beliefs.

"333 kids stealing a $3 pair of socks."

Think about this scenario for gang recruitment, where the gang wants to engage in organized shop lifting.

Send in new recruits under 18, under $25. If the kid is caught... no arrest, no record... if the kid isn't caught, he can now move up to bigger shoplifting tasks in the store.

One of my sons, when he was probably about 3 tried to steal a candy bar at the grocery store. He knew he was doing something wrong, because he was trying to hide it from me as we checked out. He had already taken a bite of it. I took it from him and apologized to the cashier and told her to add it to my other groceries. To my amazement she said, "Oh, it's ok, he can have it, dont' worry about it."
I told her no, that was stealing and my son was not going to learn to steal. I paid for the candy bar (probably gave him a whack on the rear, I don't remember) and when we got to the car, I ate it in front of him! But I was so angry that the store clerk made it out to be no big deal!

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! .40 Smith & Wesson is $16 for 100 rounds at my local Wal-Mart. I'm going to go there today and steal about 10 or 12 boxes, 1 box at a time!

I had another , that the same thing happened to. The clerk thought I was "mean". After going back and paying, and spanking him, the candy went in the trash though. The one I was talking about was a baby though. He was learning no but my bag held treasures (bottle, snacks etc, I guess) He would restock when I wasn't looking. After he was older and understood he stopped.
