WASHINGTON Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has quietly introduced a bill to create a "North American Investment Fund" that would tap U.S. and Canadian taxpayers for the development of public works projects in Mexico.
Despite assurances this week from White House press secretary Tony Snow that President Bush opposes the idea of a European Union superstate for North America, the effort, by one of the president's loyal supporters in the Senate, is sure to spark new questions about negotiations between the leaders of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico on issues ranging from security to the economy.
"Currently, a significant development gap exists between Mexico and the United States and Canada," Cornyn said. "I believe it is in our best interests to find creative ways to bridge this development gap."
Cornyn introduced the bill just before the July 4 holiday admitting in his introductory comments that Congress is not likely to adopt his plan quickly. In fact, Cornyn previously attempted to create the new international fund in legislation he introduced in 1994. It soon thereafter died in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where the latest version is headed.

"If Bush says Isreal has a right to defend itself, why can't we defend ourselves against the illegal invasion from the south?"
Because our government does not see it as an illegal invasion......
"Our INTENTIONALLY unsecured borders and our government's DELIBERATE and unapologetic lack of enforcement of our immigration and employment laws is merely a necessary step to a much larger goal...."

You say some really goofy things Claire. Florida "develop" Haiti? FReeper please!
What country has the highest proportion of its total population residing in the US?
Mexico clearly has the highest number of citizens residing here - at least 11 million, more likely close to 20 million - making their percentage about 20% of their home population. Simply amazing.
And... Can we send our poorest (and then our most unsavory criminals) somewhere else?
I wonder what Israel's numbers are. They should be up there, too.

"I don't know what the details are, but trust me, Cornyn is one of the most conservative senators in Wash, DC. World Net Daily also does not have the greatest credibility, especially Farrah. I just moved to LA a month ago but lived in TX for 18 years and I was nothing but impressed with Cornyn."

I don't know the exact percentage, but I don't that Kerry won my congressional district and that it was close. I found a website, with a map, which is color-coded, to show presidential election resutls, by congressional districts. My district is light blue.
I know of 11 state legislators in my congressional district, including seven Democrats, two RINO's, and two conservative Republicans.
Mexicans have a higher standard of living than 5 billion people in this world, so stop the whining Mexico and take care of YOUR citizens.
Excellent post: correct, bumper-sticker sized, and words small enough for a liberal to understand. Spread that one around!!
He's nuts.
I'd be interested in the opinions of you guys on this.
Just like with every other issue of aid to a foreign country, I don't like it very much unless it SERVES our interests.
I don't see that in this bill.
An example of where it serves OUR country is in a country like Iraq or Afghanistan because we are still heavily involved there.
And just becuase this bill was proposed doesn't mean crap about the NAU kookery. I'm sure the nuts will continue to try to tie this in with one and another, but I could tie in the Civil War to the rise of HItler if I tied my tinfoil on tight enough.
Our corrupt politicians don't seem to grasp how hard many Americans have to work and sacrafice for the money they so freely fritter away!
Well, they are going to need better public works when we ship 10 million to 12 million visitors back over the next few years.
I really don't have an opinion, but the bill itself (I skimmed it) appears to be legislation to raise Mexican taxes. I'm not sure if it's a workable concept. [even mixture of sarcasm and seriousness]
