WASHINGTON - In its continuing crackdown on on-air profanity, the FCC has requested numerous tapes from broadcasters that might include vulgar remarks from unruly spectators, coaches and athletes at live sporting events, industry sources said.
Tapes requested by the commission include live broadcasts of football games and NASCAR races where the participants or the crowds let loose with an expletive. While commission officials refused to talk about its requests, one broadcast company executive said the commission had asked for 30 tapes of live sports and news programs.
It looks like they want to end live broadcast TV, said one executive, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. We already know that they arent afraid to go after news.

Ridiculous.
Perhaps the FCC can spend a little more time and effort policing the cursing and other foul behaivior that goes on during network prime-time shows.
Perhaps the government should dissolve the FCC altogether since it is a worthless piece of sh*t government intrusion into our lives.
...and yet commercials are embedded with more "coincidental" stuff than can be imagined!
caca doodoo poopoo
This is the stupidest &%#&ing thing I 've ever &#%^ig heard! When will these &%$#(*& bureaucrats learn that we are adults out here in America, and don't need to be babysat?
Let's just regulate the &%&ing NBA, the %^$ing NFL and the gosh-darned MLB out of existence! The FCC are a bunch of *%$&ed Nazis! I've had it. BTW, The Chairman of the FCC is a Democrat.
About 2 years ago I was watching a minor league hockey game on cable. A player went to the penalty box, and a camera right next to the box focused on him. As it did, a drunken fan started haranguing him. Right as the camera zoomed in close to the player, he turned to the fan and said, "Kiss my a$$, you fat sack of $hit!" I about fell out of my chair laughing.
This is getting absurd.
Actually, it is already absurd.
More tax dollars wasted...
Sorry, I meant a &%(*ing Democrat.
Well, I'm glad they're doing this. A popular culture as high-minded, pure, wholesome, and saintly as ours is, shouldn't be smudged by something like this.
That is totally false. Kevin Martin is a Republican.
Regarding this development - the public airwaves should be kept clean, but the FCC should rely on the viewer complain process for finding violations, rather that trying to scrutinize every syllable uttered on TV itself.
Sorry. Must be a new guy. A couple years ago, after Michael Powell left a dem took over. Didn't know another guy was in there. Just goes to show our side can be idiots too.
This is #@*&!$@ stupid!
Powell was appointed to the FCC by Clinton for the GOP seat on the FCC, per John McCain's request. Then President Bush appointed him chairman. He was probably the worst member of the Bush administration during his tenure. Powell was replaced by Martin, who was a member of the Bush campaign's legal team in Florida during the 2000 recount battle. I like Martin, but I do agree with your final observation.
Cable stations are not covered by the indecency laws. They only apply to broadcasts on the public airwaves. That is a reasonable arrangement, in my opinion.
moral absolutes bump.
I agree. The airwaves, to the extent they belong to the public, have to be regulated. For instance, while watching the Home Run Derby the other night, David Wright (3B, Mets) was bleeped a dozen or more times over the course of the evening. I'm glad my family didn't have to change the channel just to avoid hearing his filthy mouth.
If the airwaves are public, they belong to us "prudes," too. We shouldn't HAVE to "shut it off" and miss something which is otherwise enjoyable. To them, I say if you really have to get your quota of that stuff, feel free to turn to a cable channel and find something more to YOUR liking.
>>coaches and athletes
Got a tape recently of this; Cubs mgr. Lee Elia in 1983.
here's a transcript (foul language alert--you can also
hear it):

NOW you're talkin'!!!
But let's not stop there. Then I'd add HUD, Education, IRS, etc.,etc., etc.,....
