Some say chief of turnpike will pay political price

The Legislature has frequently rallied behind Matthew J. Amorello during his stormy tenure as chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, but yesterday he had few defenders on Beacon Hill.
Senate President Robert E. Travaglini, who has been an Amorello ally, refused repeated requests to comment about Amorello, a former Republican senator known for his ties to his former colleagues in the State House.
Six lawmakers and legislative staff members who were interviewed said privately that Amorello will pay a political price in the aftermath of the fatal accident Monday night. Governor Mitt Romney and Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly publicly called for him to step down. Lawmakers who did speak publicly yesterday offered carefully worded remarks, saying they believed Amorello was being blamed for failures at the Big Dig that are not his fault. Amorello rebuffed calls to resign yesterday.
``The problems precede him," said Senator Robert L. Hedlund, Republican of Weymouth. ``The focus should be on holding those accountable who caused cost overruns and oversaw shoddy workmanship. That's the issue. It isn't making Matt Amorello a scapegoat. That isn't going to accomplish anything with cost recovery.
``I'm not defending Matt Amorello," he added. ``I don't mean to sound that way."

Amorillo, on the other hand, looks like a new leader here in MA that will lead us to the promised land.
Why not? Mike Chertoff kept his job after Katrina. Incompetents who get people killed seem to be the darlings of politicos these days.
What are the odds that, if the man had been a Dem, his party affiliation would not have been mentioned???
You are blaming Chertoff for Katrina? As though he had operational control of the engineers and disaster relief. This is not like Mark Clark messing up in Italy.
How long has this guy been on the job? Is holding him responsible for this actually sensible?

Chertoff's failure to ensure that FEMA was an effective disaster relief agency makes him ultimately responsible for its failures during the Katrina debacle. The fact that he wasn't fired afterwards has always left a bad taste in my mouth.

The breadth and depth of the Katrina DISASTER was more than any planning could have anticipated. The measure of responsibility for reaction to that disaster should be measured by what has happened and is happening in the states affected.
The Big Dig was a Massachusetts Marxist boondoggle from day one of the planning stage. Corruption, graft, nepotism, egotism, ignorance, incompetence, thievery, and self-promotion were all in evidence; and all at taxpayer expense - thank you America for lining so many crooks' pockets. Throughout, the planning was obtuse, the engineering flawed, the supervision slipshod, and the workmanship atrocious. Although touted as a solution to Boston's traffic congestion, it was clear as work commenced that, even if it came in at projected cost and was flawlessly built, its provisions would be at best inadequate. Yet, it's been defective from the start, and now the hack Romney, the crook Reilly, and a cast of thousands are all frantically playing Cover Your A$$ and scapegoating the nearest convenient Target Of Opportunity. In truth, there's enough blame to go around the state bureaucracy and the state legislature several times over, but in a Marxist entity - as history clearly shows - everything, and I do mean everything, slowly turns to cr@p. In any case, everyone who had anything to do with this project should be in jail, along with the entire state government machine of Massacusetts.
