ELECTRONIC monitoring of pedophiles is expected to begin later this year as part of a wider crackdown to limit their movements.

Police Minister Judy Spence, who travelled to New Zealand earlier this year to examine the electronic bracelets, yesterday said she hoped to have them on paroled sex offenders within six months.

The news came as State Cabinet approved a plan to allow police to seek a Child Protection Prohibition Order, which would give them the power to restrict the movement of pedophiles.

The laws will be introduced later this year allowing police to request that pedophiles be prevented from living in certain areas, and going within 200m of playgrounds or shopping centres during hours when large numbers of children could be there.

Ms Spence said once introduced, the laws would be the toughest in Australia.

"The trigger for police to apply for an order will be if the offender has a previous relevant conviction and displays recent concerning conduct, such as loitering near a school or playground, watching children for long periods or taking photos without parental consent, without actually committing a further offence," she said.

"Anyone who breaches an order will appear before a court and runs the risk of going to jail for a maximum of two years."

The crackdown was sparked by a case last year where a convicted pedophile was charged with sex offences against two girls.

Hanging is the best solution but monitoring is better than current systems.

This of course isn't in the article but you guys have to admit there is some truth to this.

The liberal will try to argue against such methods of electronic monitoring and will claim privacy and civil rights, yet the same person will be for gun control. Does anyone else see something wrong with that picture?

With today's computers, the paperwork associated with this should be a snap.

I don't think you quite got what I meant. Toe tags are used to identify corpses.

I wish communists, liberals, Nazis, and terrorists could be tagged too, to monitor, and counter promotion of destruction of US. Their rights excluding privacy will be guaranteed as long as they do not threat for any violence against the country, such as using weapons, and engaging in frauds.

I knew exactly what you meant. I was adding that paperwork should not discourage the process. ;-D

Haven't you ever heard, "I'd kill him, but he isn't worth the paperwork" ?.
