Satellite photos detect activity at N Korea missile bases: report
TOKYO (AFP) - North Korea could be preparing for new launches of mid-range missiles following last week's tests, with activity detected at its bases, a report has said citing Japanese government sources.
US and Japanese satellite photos show that mid-range Rodong missiles had been set up on launch pads at a base in southeastern North Korea, but were later removed, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported.
Fuel tanks could be seen near the launch pads, the report said.
The report said the satellite photos were taken after last week's tests of seven missiles, but did not give a specific date.
"We think North Korea can launch missiles whenever it wishes," the top-selling daily quoted a government source as saying.
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso on Sunday suggested Tokyo would have the right to launch a pre-emptive strike to protect its citizens from a missile launch by Pyongyang.
He said there were "visible signs" of activity at a North Korean missile base from which North Korea launched a Rodong missile last week.
Japan submitted a draft binding resolution in the United Nations Security Council that would impose sanctions on North Korea over the missile tests.
But on Monday, the Security Council put off a vote on the resolution to allow more time for Chinese diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis.

The situation in North Korea is serious for both the short and the long term. Short term, our ability to defend against missiles from North Korea is not very good.
The U.S. Missile Defense system is tenuous at best. Largely untested, there are only 11 silo-housed strategic interceptors spread in California and Alaska. The U.S. Navy compliments this basic, initial capability with handfuls of missiles at sea -- but those interceptors were built to handle shorter range threats than the Taepo Dong-2 that North Korea is trying to bring from puberty to adult fruition.
Completing the U.S. layered, multi-service, multi-sensor and multi-interceptor-type system will still be a monumental task both in terms of time and money. This is one of the big long-term efforts that has to go forward.
Maybe now, more people will understand the value of missile defense. Without it, all we can do is diplomatig or an air strike.
If one of Kim's missiles tracks toward Japan, or impacts on Japanese soil, even if it does not have a warhead, would it be considered an "attack" and therefore an act of war? And what might Japan's response be?
Looking at the picture, remember that Kim Jong Il and his father Kim Il Sung are responsible for the death of millions of Koreans by starvation and execution. Clinton appeased Kim Jong Il, just as he appeased or ignored the terrorists for 8 years. Kim Jong Il should be exterminated like a cockroach.

Quite the observation from the "government source" (rolling eyes). I wonder which government.
Regardless a couple of comments. If China can reign in the dog-eating ChiaPet, yet again, I think that would be good. Unfortunately anymore it seems to be much like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound and rue the day the Chinese lose control over their evil little creation.
We know Russia and China will fight sanctions that have any teeth to them. I have mixed feelings whether it's a good or bad thing to concretely demonstrate that to the world via a formal vote.
Finally the fact the latest missiles were removed may be a good sign. Perhaps (lifting prayers here) we've made the Chinese an offer they can't refuse. Somehow.
I continue to be surprised at the lack of coverage of any response from S. Korea. Not sure if they are keeping mum or the press simply is ignoring them.
In addition to the geopolitical posturing, another reason they feel they HAVE to conduct a successful launch is that they are in the arms business and missile technology is one of their leading products. They have to prove to current and potential customers that they successfully launch their missiles.
From their point of view their nationalistic ego, their status as 'a real power' & 'a threat that cannot be ignored', and their business credibility as an arms dealer is all at stake.
I think this is a scam by Russia and China to try to detect US surveillance and defense capabilities....BINGO!!!!!
I appreciate the links. Extra-busyness in my life lately may have prevented me seeing these sorts of stories and I haven't had the time to go searching for them.
