I hate to give the slimes a hit, but those pictures are heart breaking, the pregnant 13 year old second wife, married off to repay a gambling debt. One question though, why no burkas on these Afgani women?

Just hazarding a guess here, but perhaps it was OK for them to be 'seen' by Stephanie Sinclair (perfect initials for an NYT photojournalist). Perhaps they're so backward as to not even know/remember photographs.
But being backward is the least of their problems. One guy in the series has a daughter the exact same age as his new bride. No pedophilia compunctions there. God love him, nobody else can love anybody that sick.

I saw that "bride." I can't tell if it's just because she is so young, or hysterical but she didn't look all there. I think in the US she'd be riding one of those short school buses...or maybe that's how she handles the horror of her daily life, married to Hugh Hefner...

It rarely happens, but it is legal. I have heard that some stastics actually support teen marriages as longer lasting than those later in life? (just as stastics show those that live together before getting married have a higher divorse rate).. Not that I am for any 13 y/o (especially of mine) getting married, but young marriage ages in America have happened for some time... yes even at 13...
There is a thread on FR from long ago about a church in Georgia that has members go to Alabama to marry quite often. (if I remember correctly, it was the church that beat a member for getting caught having sex in the church).
I am too lazy to search for that thread.. but lots of good discussion was on it.
