Dress code takes sparkle out of students' smiles

Arlington ISD: Officials limit mouth, ear jewelry

11:26 PM CDT on Sunday, July 9, 2006

By TOYA LYNN STEWART / The Dallas Morning News

Kayden Dorman BARBARA DAVIDSON/DMN Body piercer Kayden Dorman disagrees with the Arlington school district's new dress code: "If they're allowing people to wear earrings, they should allow them to wear bigger earrings."

Karrick Senegar says rapping and grills go together like cars and tires.

That's why the 16-year-old aspiring rapper and Arlington student spent $200 in April on the mouth jewelry known as a grill. But the Sam Houston High School junior won't be able to flash his six-tooth white-gold diamond-cut grill around campus come August.

The Arlington school district has changed its dress code to ban the trendy mouth jewelry. Also added to the unacceptable list are tall tees – oversized shirts that hang to the knees – and the practice of stretching out earlobes, sometimes called gauging.

are you going to had you car keys to this clown?

Only if I'm driving a beater. OK, so I set his career aspirations too high. He can spend his life working in a tattoo parlor making others look as ridiculous as he does........

"When you put grills in, you can't talk well."

If the wearer of the grille speaks nothing but ebonics, who's going to notice any difference?

People can bleat and blather all they like, but high school students are NOT adults and should not be allowed to act like them.

Schools used to be about setting standards for students, including dress and appearance. There was general agreement about civilized behavior. We can blame the 60s and its enforcers, like the ACLU, for the idea that barbaric dress and behavior are seen as protected expressions of "individuality." I wonder how many of these self-important, in-your-face "individualists" has ever had an independent thought.

As for the "supportive" parents--no thanks for contributing to the decline of our civilization.

I don't know what a "mouth grill" is either. Is it related to a knuckle sandwich?

"Still a hippie. Carpenter, vegetarian and complete pacifist."

Sounds like Jesus, except I think technically he ate fish.

On the tattoos and piercings and whatever, I knew a lot of kids that did that stuff but I never found it necessary, and in a lot of ways it's more lame and conformist having that stuff, you're not really setting yourself apart as an individual when you have the same stretched ears and lame arm band tattoos as everyone else. But then again if someone wants to have odd colored hair for fun who cares, it's them thast have to deal with the consequences.

That same effect will be a problem for the school district. Even if they are empty, the lobes are stretched and will be obvious in school.

Good for you. Far too many parents won't "parent" their kids.

As a 60s era kid going to school, I can attest to the fact that schools established strict dress codes and behavioral standards.

The lack of parenting and the relaxation of established requirements have led to much of the antics being indulged in by high school kids to day. I concur with your comments about the ACLU and "supportive" parents. But, we wouldn't have this environment in schools today without the third component - a very willing and complicit NEA that is more wrapped up in the kids' "self-esteem" than in their ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical computations.

Jesus a pacifist?

LOL!!

The Quakers think that way, and I get a laugh whenever I think what the looks on their faces will be when they see the events related in Revelation 19:11-16.

Glad he's your old (as in discarded) boyfriend. He was obviously too stupid for you to be seen with and I'm sure you never had a meaningful conversation. I know, I know, he was probably really cute. And like you said, hopefully he matured and figured it out.

I once worked in an office where there was a really nice looking guy. We ladies used to joke "If only he wouldn't open his mouth!" He was really stuck on stupid.

One good thing at least, neither of these losers can sneak up on you from behind, they likely sound like someone jingling a pocketful of coins when they walk.

No, rapping and grills go together like raw sewage and a foul stench.

There are thousands more people into cars than into rap, and you don't see car buffs walking around with tires in their mouths.

You know, I kinda like the little skulls. A set of those and a devil mask would be just the thing for a fun-loving Doctor to greet his patients with when they're coming to after surgery...

I agree, except that I think the NEA is more sinister...

Appearance expression will be forbidden until other forms of expression are mastered.

Applying that standard would all but eliminate this nonsense. Great line (and idea).
