Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev - dubbed the Beast of Beslan - has been killed by Russia's security forces.
The radical Islamic leader was behind the Beslan school siege in which hundreds of people, mostly children, were killed.
Basayev, 41, together with other Chechen fighters, was killed in Ingushetia, a region neighbouring Chechnya, in an operation by Russian special forces, Russia said.
President Vladimir Putin said Basayev's killing was "deserved retribution".
"This is deserved retribution against the bandits for our children in Beslan, in Budennovsk, for all these acts of terror they committed in Moscow and other Russian regions, including Ingushetia and Chechnya," Mr Putin said.
FSB head Nikolai Patrushev said Chechen rebels were planning an attack in southern Russia to coincide with the Group of Eight summit later this week in Russia, which Mr Putin is chairing.
He indicated other countries may have been involved in the planning the attack on Basayev.
More than 331 people, half of them children, were killed in Beslan after Russian forces tried to end a siege of the school which had been seized by Islamist militants linked to Chechnya's fight for independence.
More than 100 people were killed in 1995 when Chechen rebels seize hundreds of hostages at a hospital in Budennovsk.
Awesome - keep up the full court press - never let the scumbags enjoy a minute's rest!
Great news.
And what of Basayev's #1 fan on FR?
I hope the Bush Administration considers the Chechnya "rebels" a terrorist problem than one of insurgency. US policy has treated Chechnya as a insurgency and have lambasted Russia for its treatment of the rebels even though they have criminal and military ties to the world wide islamofacist movement. the Russians have been pissed for years on the US verbal support for Chechnya rebels even though the rebels have leadership such as this killer of children.
Standing ovation for the Russian military! :-)
What's this? I thought he was already dead?
This is like the tenth time he has been killed?
I give up.
Ahhh, 'tis a good day!
You've been around since 2000 so I would like to think ...
And no, no one is stupid enough to think that Mexicans are suicide bombers.
Oh, btw the American "Beslan" can happen in Maine for all we know - done by Muslim terrorists.
Basayev has fan on FR??? You're friggin' kidding me, right?
5.56mm
My post was ridicule of the absurd tendency to take completely unrelated events and throw Illegals at them as you did.
The Somalians in Maine are NOT Illegals either.
Where are all the posters who scoffed that Putin had done "nothing" about Beslan and therefore had no credibility regarding the Russian diplomats grabbed in Iraq?
Oh, they're busy eating crow, I guess.
No kidding! He's been gone now for years but he hated Putin so much that we cheered Basayev on. We never really knew if he was being tongue-in-cheek about his support for Islamic terrorism in Europe and Russia.
we=he as in "he cheered Basayev on."
Personally I'm glad he's dead!
Oh Darn, they lost another one...............Next
This is almost as important as getting Osama. Beslan turned my stomach.
He acted fairly quickly in Beslan.
If he administers justice to the al Qaeda thugs in Iraq quickly, I would prefer my crow well done and doused in BBQ sauce cooked on a slow but hot Weber.
Actually, the Russians will take out these Iranian thugs as they find them.
My crow order will come when he goes after those in Iran and Syria, who have helped the Islamofacists to kill innocents in Russia. .
I'm not throwing irrelevant things, Mexicans or Somalians at the subject. Jesus help us, I didn't even mention Somalians.
I'm speaking of Islamic, Muslim Terror Cells that will take the lead from Chechens and make a similar attack on the USA.
All I'm saying is close the borders as Israel has done to prevent future killings.
I can't wait to hear how you respond to this one... lol..
